PRINCIPLES OF DESIGN

ERIC R. SARAMOSING
PRINCIPLES OF
DESIGN
• The Principles are concepts used to
organize or arrange the structural elements
of design.
• The way in which these principles are
applied affects the expressive content, or
the message of the work.
7 PRINCIPLES
OF DESIGN
1. BALANCE
• A sense of equilibrium.
• When establishing balance
consider visual weight
created by size, color, texture
and number of objects.
• It is a reconciliation of
opposing forces in a
composition that results in
visual stability.
TYPES OF BALANCE

• SYMMETRICAL • ASYMMETRICAL
• Achieved by placing • Achieved by placing
identical objects on different objects of
either side of a equal visual weight
central point. on either side of a
central point.
SYMMETRICAL OR FORMAL BALANCE
• can be described as having equal "weight" on
equal sides
• The elements within the design are identical in
relation to centerline or axis.

The Taj Mahal

Mausoleum
Agra, Uttar
Pradesh, India
ASYMMETRICAL
BALANCE

• Parts of the design are

not identical but are
equal in visual weight.
ASYMMETRICAL BALANCE

• Mirror is placed off

center on the
mantle.
• Tray and bottles on
either side of the
mirror help to
balance it out.
ASYMMETRICAL BALANCE

• Wall hangings of the

same visual weight
are hung on each
side of the plant
stand.
• Chair balances out
the fireplace on the
other side of the
room.
RADIAL BALANCE

• Radial Balance involves having furnishings

or patterns arranged in a circular

manner.
• Radiation creates a sweeping, dramatic,
circular motion in a room.
RADIAL BALANCE
2. RHYTHM
• Leads the eye from one point to another,
creates motion.
• Repeated/duplicated use of line, shape,
color, texture or pattern
RHYTHM BY REPETITION

• Beams in the ceiling

are repeated.
Window panes,
repeat. Stripes on
ottoman and chair
are repeated.
RHYTHM BY GRADATION

• Rhythm created by a
gradual change in
size or color.
• Paint on wall
changes gradually
in value.
RHYTHM BY RADIATION

• Rhythm created by
identical objects
coming from a
central axis.
• Tall Grasses
“radiate” from the
center of the vase on
this bathroom vanity.
3. EMPHASIS
• The feature in a
design that attract
one’s eye – the focal
point

• Can be achieved through size,

placement, shape, color and/or use
of lines
EMPHASIS

• Colour is emphasized by surrounding white.

• Uses rule of thirds.
• The use of line draws the viewers eye to the
focal point.
4. UNITY
• Unity is achieved by
the consistent use of
lines, color, material
and/or texture
within a design
• A harmonious
arrangement of
elements
• Simplicity (all the
leaves are the same
shape and color)
• Repetition (the leaf is
repeated several times.
• Proximity (all the leaves
come together and are
in close proximity to
one another-not spread
apart)
5. MOVEMENT
• Flow or feeling of action
• A directed path of optical motion
• The use of lines, colors, values,
textures, forms and space to carry or
direct the eye of the viewer from one
part of the design or picture to other.
• generally
created by the
arrangement of
shapes.
6. PATTERN
• An
orderly
repetition
of an
object
• The repetition of the elements of
art in an artwork.
• Pattern and Rhythm both rely on
repeating elements
7. CONTRAST
• A juxtaposition that accentuates
difference
• Difference between elements such
as color, texture, value and shape
Involves using elements that are
opposite.
• Difference between elements as
color
ACTIVITY

• Identify which of the following

pictures describe/uses the
principles of design
ACTUAL HANDS ON ACTIVITY
• The group will make a plan.
• Choose a theme. Take at least 2 photographs
of each principles of deign that pertain to
your theme. (14 minimum)
• Edit you photograph.
• Save you photos into a folder labeled “NAME
PRINCIPLES”
• Complete a critical analysis on one of your
photos.
