Lighting Terms
 Lumen: Lamp output term: (quantity) total
E.g. 100 watt incandescent = 1750 lumen
 Light Density: foot-candles: [on a surface]
◦ 1 fc = 1 lumen/1 S.F.

◦ 1 LUX = 1 lumen/square meter

◦ “The difference between the units lumen and LUX is that the
lux takes into account the area over which the luminous flux is
spread”

 Thus one foot-candle is equal to one lumen per square foot

or ~~ 10.764 LUX . 1 FC = 0.0923 lux

 Think Lumens, Think Brightness

Amount of Illumination
 200-500 FC – difficult work: surgery
[task]
 30-50 FC - office and home work
 5-20 FC – no seeing tasks required; just
security, Hallway, safety [ambient]
 See Table 5-5 in text
 Need light meter [SHOW them ]
ASHRAE 90.1 2016
CRI
 Coloring rendering index = Color
accuracy
 = How close the light source indicates
the color of the object [flexfireleds.com]
Color Rendering. LPS:
 CRI is a measure of a light source's ability to
render colors the same way that sun light
does.
 e.g. Incandescent = 100 [~ best]
 Fluorescent [T-8] ~75-85
 CFL ~ 80-85
 High Pressure Sodium ~ 22 [poor]
 LPS = 0 [or (-)]
 May be important or unimportant depending
on required tasks
Fluorescent Light Recommendations :

 Evidentially you change out T-12 with T-8

or T5 bulbs and not change the fixtures.
[?]
 But you must used socket adaptors
[conversion kit]
and use compatible ballasts (EE).
 T-measure = eighths of an inch
 T-12 = 12/8 = 1.5 inch dia.
 [See example on p. 226]
LEDs [semiconductor]
 High efficiency
 Does not heat up
 80 % goes to light
 Long lasting
 Directional light[+/-]
 More Expensive
 Dimmable
 Not sensitive to low Temperature
