Reflective Practice
The concepts:
• RP is the ability to reflect on one's actions so as to
engage in a process of continuous learning (Schon,
1983).
• It involves "paying critical attention to the practical
values and theories which inform everyday actions,
by examining practice reflectively and reflexively. This
leads to developmental insight“ (Bolton, 2010).
• Experience alone does not necessarily lead to
learning; deliberate reflection on experience is
essential (Loughran, 2002, Cochran-Smith, 1999).
Collaboration
The concepts:
• It is beneficial in fostering teacher development as it can open
opportunities for teachers to learn from each other, share and develop
their expertise together (Hargreaves, 1994).
• It builds teachers’ confidence to experiment with new learning methods
and take risks as a result of collegial sharing.
• It promotes greater reflection because engaging with other people
allowed discussing, questioning, and confronting in a safe environment,
and thus resulting in encouraging self-revelation as well as seeing other
points of view (Hatton and Smith, 1995)
• It is needed to ensure that teachers benefit from their experiences and
continue to grow during their career (Shulman, 1989).
Characteristics of collaboration
(Hargreaves, 1994)
• 1) spontaneous
• 2) voluntary
• 3) development-oriented
• 4) pervasive, and
• 5) unpredictable.
Collaborative reflective practice
The concept:
• Reflection is more effective when learners work with
an assigned mentor (Johns, 2000)
• Through sharing reflections on learning experiences,
greater understanding of those experiences could be
achieved than by reflection as a lone exercise.
• Reflective practice can be conducted more effectively
when working together with other colleagues.
The Question?????

• What type of collaborative reflective practice

model that EFL teachers can do to improve
their PL?

• Please discuss this question with people next

to you.
A Quotation:

• If you want to improve teaching, the most effective way to do so is in the

context of classroom lessons (Stigler & Hiebert, 1999).
