Approaches to colour in architecture and
design
INTRODUCTION

Colour is an integral element of our world, not

just in the natural environment but also in the
man-made architectural environment. Colour
always played a role in the human evolutionary
process. The environment and its colours are
perceived, and the brain processes and judges
what it perceives on an objective and
subjective basis. Psychological influence,
communication, information, and effects on the
psyche are aspects of our perceptual judgment
processes. Hence, the goals of colour design in
an architectural space are not relegated to
decoration alone.
Approaches to colour in architecture and
design

Especially in the last eleven decades, empirical

observations and scientific studies have proven that
human-environment-reaction in the architectural
environment is to a large percentage based on the
sensory perception of color. These studies include the
disciplines of psychology, architectural psychology,
color psychology, neuropsychology, visual ergonomics,
psychosomatics, and so forth. In short, it confirms that
human response to color is total – it influences us
psychologically and physiologically.
The American Faber Barren, considered the father of
applied color psychology (originator of the OSHA
colors) and the first to establish the profession of color
consultant in 1936, proclaimed: “The study of color is
essentially a mental and psychological science, for the
term color itself refers to sensation.”

design

Color is a sensory perception, and as any sensory

perception, it has effects that are symbolic,
associative, synesthetic, and emotional. The color
specifier/designer has the task of knowing how
the reception of visual stimulation, its processing
and evoked responses in conjunction with the
hormonal system, produces the best possibilities
for the welfare of human beings.
This is of utmost importance in varied
environments, such as medical and psychiatric
facilities, offices, industrial and production plants,
educational facilities, homes for the elderly,
correctional facilities, and so forth. Each within
themselves having different task and function
areas.

AIM

The aim is to provide stud by concentrating on

the effects of how colours are used, and the
identity of brand space, on the interior spaces
of commercial buildings, to be used by
architects and interior designers in their
applications. In addition to that determining the
effects of colour formations of a brand space
on the interior commercial spaces, and how it
enhances commercial activities; and to what
extent the properties of colour, (hue, value and
intensity), warm, cold, and neutral colours that
help in enhancing trading activities inside
interior commercial spaces will be addressed.

SCOPE

More Than Just

Decoration. Colour is an integral

architectural environment. Colour a

LIMITATIONS
The research work will be within the following parameters:
Emphasizing the methods of enhancing the commercial
activities by means of using colour formations and brand
space inside commercial interior spaces within the limits of
interior architectural design. Concerning the subject matter, it
will investigate colour concepts and systems, and the effects
of its properties (Hue, Value and Chroma ), and studying the
marketing role of brand space, in addition to the parallel
effects that emanates from of the architectural interior
spaces of commercial building. About twenty five samples of
International companies were chosen, but because of lack of
sufficient data and photographs for some companies such as:
(Apple, Amazon.com, Intel, HSBC Bank, 3M… etc.); repetition
about colour usage in brand and interior space such as: (
Coca-Cola, Samsung, Canon, Colgate, Nescafe… etc.), only
eight samples were used for the analysis.

METHODOLOGY

This work of study relies on the theoretical

basis of investigation, in clarifying the
relationship between colour formations and
the identity of brand space inside
commercial spaces. There will be an
evaluation and analysis of certain samples
of commercial buildings of some famous
concerns of various functions, collecting
data by means of a survey. Following that
there will be an analysis of these buildings
according to criteria adopted by the
researcher on theoretical framework.
