CHAPTER 1

Understanding Reality
in a Bigger Picture
“Wise man doesn't
give the right answers,
he poses the right
questions”
“Do not confuse the
forest for the trees”
What is
Philosophy?
What is
Philosophy?
Comes from Greek term Philo
means Love and Sophia means
Wisdom
What is Wisdom?
What is its difference
from knowledge?
Philosophy is not only for
Philosophers. Every one has the
capacity to find the value of
philosophy in his/ her own life.
Simple or
Philosophical
Statement?
Your mother asked you
to go to the market and
you asked her what
items to buy.
Your mother asked you
to go to the market and
you asked how much is
the budget to take with
you.
Your mother asked you to go to
the market and you asked
yourself, “Why do people have
to buy things when God
Created nature where these
goods come from?’
It is not an ordinary question
but a difficult one.
This is an example of

Philosophical
Reflection
Philosophical Reflection
•This are questions that do not have
definite or specific answer.
•Also called as Philosophical Questions
Have you asked difficult
questions?
There are important questions
that do not have ready
answers. We are puzzled by
many questions.
One of those we ask are
“Why am I here”
“Why was I ever born?”
“What am I here for?”
“What is the purpose of my
existence?’
Why
when you get hurt?
What if there is no

after-life?
Have we asked such
questions? When does
such questions come?
The thing is, no amount of
research would be able to
provide a definite or conclusive
answer to some questions that
puzzles us.
We ask them now and then.
Sometimes, we think we have
found the answer, only to find
ourselves asking the question
again.
At other times, we get distracted
and evade the questions until
some situations bring us back to
asking it again.
It will not go away unless we dea
with it through reflection.
‘WALANG
FOREVER’
When you begin to agree, or
disagree, it calls for a

philosophical
thinking
These difficult questions are
significant and do matters to us
for they reflect our desire to
understand or at least make
sense of our experience
The answers we find directly
affect the way we go through life
When we ponder a
philosophical question, we
are engaged in a
philosophical reflection
Philosophy allows us the
freedom to ask even those
questions that others believe to
already have a definite answer.
What are the creative ways
of asking philosophical
questions?
It could be through movies,
songs and literatures
For Example:

What is Love ?
For Example:

What is Love?
(often asked implicitly or explicitly
in various art forms)
Do love has a
conclusive answer or
definition?
A Philosophical question
always contains a bigger
problem. For example, in
asking question, “Why am I
here?”
Not to ask philosophical
question is to go through life
confused and lost.
Here are some Philosophical
Questions:
1. Why is love complicated?
2. Why do people have to die?
3. Do heaven and hell exists?
What is

Metaphysics?
Metaphysics
-one of the main branches of
philosophy and it deals with the so-
called “Being of Beings”.

-In Greek, it is ta meta ta physika,

meaning beyond (meta) the physical
(physika) things.
For example:
When we ask, why stone can
never be water, why is
yellow yellow.
The search for answers only
begins the moment we ask a
philosophical question
