ACTIVE VOICE

DEFINITION

Active voice is a sentence that is used when we want to

say that the subject (for examples: I, We, You, They, He,
She, It, Susan, The car) does an action.
So, the subject is the doer of the action.

Example:
- Iwan Fals sings a song
PATTERN
OF ACTIVE VOICE

SUBJECT + VERB + O

Example:
1. Ningrum invites me to the party.
• Ningrum(subject) is doing the “inviting” (verb)

2. The students are studying chemistry now.

• The students (subject) is doing the “studying” (verb)
CHARACTERISTICS
OF ACTIVE VOICE ARE:

 The subject of sentence in active form is at the starting of the

sentence.
 Subject is followed by the form of “to be”, verb and object.
 We can say that verb is in the Active Voice.
 An active voice tells clearly about the action who has done it.
PASSIVE VOICE

DEFINITION

Passive voice is a sentence that used when we want to

say that the subject (for examples: I, We, You, They, He,
She, It, Susan, The car) is not the doer that does an
action, but receives an action.

Example:
- A song is sung by Iwan Fals.
PATTERN
OF PASSIVE VOICE

SUBJECT + BE + PAST PARTICIPLE VERB/VERB 3 + BY + O

Example:

ACTIVE PASSIVE

SIMPLE PRESENT Susan helps Tomi  Tomi is helped by Susan

PRESENT CONTINUOUS Susan is helping Tomi  Tomi is being helped by Susan

SIMPLE PAST Susan helped Tomi  Tomi was helped by Susan

PRESENT PERFECT Susan has helped Tomi  Tomi has been helped by Susan

SIMPLE FUTURE Susan will help Tomi  Tomi will be helped by Susan
CHARACTERISTICS
OF PASSIVE VOICE ARE:

 When we change the sentence from active to passive voice, the

object becomes the subject.
 We can use sentences with only transitive verbs in passive voice
that is we can change the sentences having object into this voice.
 This form may or may not tell clearly about the action who has
done it.
 To make clear the action who has done it we should add “by”.
