DEFINITION of INTERNET

=A network of computer networks


which operates world-wide using a
common set of communications
protocols.
=The vast collection of inter-connected
networks across the world that all use
the TCP/IP (Transmission Control
Protocol/Internet Protocol) protocols.

Some definitions:
WWW: World Wide Web or simply “THE WEB”
= A network of documents which reside on
computers around the world and which can be
accessed through one another.
= A global information medium which users can read
and write via computers connected to the Internet.
The term is often mistakenly used as a synonym for
the Internet itself, but the Web is a service that
operates over the Internet, as e-mail does.
Created in the early 1990s by the European
Laboratory for Particle Physics.
1st publicly accessible Web site was created in 1991.
Browsing= a method of navigating through pages
of information on the Web

Tim Berners-Lee (1989) – who proposed the Web at


the European Center for Nuclear Research
(CERN), Geneva.

Web Site = a collection of web pages

Home Page = the first page retrieved when


accessing a web site.
Web Browser
= a software program that allows to access and view Web pages.
= is a software application which enables a user to display and
interact with text, images, videos, music, games and other
information typically located on a Web page at a Web site on
the World Wide Web or a local area network.

Some handy information:
1. If you try to open a site, and the computer responds with
something like "NO DNS entry," don't panic! First, check
the spelling of the address you have entered. If you're
sure it's correct, try to access the site at a different time of
day.
2. Notice how the addresses you type look like. They tell you
how far you are going to access information.
American web sites contain letters like:
.com (which stands for "commercial")
.edu "education,"
.gov "government,"
.org "non-profit organization."
Other countries are marked by country codes, for
example:
.ca - Canada
.de - Germany
.es - Spain
.fr - France
.it - Italy
.jp - Japan
.ru - Russian
.su - also Russia
3. Make sure you type in addresses exactly as
they appear. Capitalization, punctuation, and
spacing matter!
WHAT IS ELECTRONIC MAIL (E-MAIL)?
Electronic-mail or Email is the process of sending
messages electronically using your computer.
Addresses are made up in a standard way using
the following elements:
User Identification e.g. merton70 – your name
you wish to choose.
The @ or at symbol to locate the person
The domain name of the computer receiving your
mail e.g. yahoo.com

Example: merton70@yahoo.com
SEARCH ENGINE
A search engine is an information
retrieval system designed to help find
information stored on a computer
system. Search engines help to
minimize the time required to find
information and the amount of
information which must be consulted,
akin to other techniques for managing
information overload.
The most popular form of a search engine
is a Web search engine which searches for
information on the public World Wide Web. Other
kinds of search engines include enterprise
search engines, which search on intranets,
personal search engines, and mobile search
engines.
Common search engines include: Google
(including newsgroups, scholar, news, and
books), Alexa, Archive.org (The Wayback
Machine, and Yahoo!. Specialist search engines
exist for medicine, science, news and law among
others.
