Understanding the USC Motto
Scientia
• means knowledge

• entails to deepen knowledge of the truth and


enhances one’s God-given talents and skills to
perfection

• molds a person to become professionally


competent
Virtus
• means virtue

• implies nobility in character nurtured by prayer life

• must possess the Beatitudes especially purity of


heart and poverty in spirit

• morally literate and ethically critical


Devotio
• means dedication

• refers to acts of justice and charity towards others in


community and the environment

• applying Scientia and Virtus in real-life situations

• molds a person to become public service oriented

o comes from the Latin word integritatem which means wholeness
 end lifestyle that is promotive of corruption, and work for honesty as well
as transparency in all transactions

2. Excellence
o state/condition of achieving exceptional quality in one’s endeavor
o associated with diligence
 aim for quality work and the best output for every task

3. Commitment
o comes from the Latin word committere which means to join, connect or
entrust
 devote oneself to a certain task to answer the needs of the community

4. Social Responsibility
o important in realizing the Devotio aspect
o Carolinians must exercise accountability for their actions in relation to
what benefits the whole society.
o must uphold a balance between economic growth and welfare of the
society and the environment
 Care for the environment and for the transformation of the society

o refers to the passionate and dynamic proclamation of Jesus Christ’s
message of salvation and the reign of God
o direct towards conversion
o comes from the Latin word evangelium that originally comes from the
Greek word evangelion meaning good news
 become a proclaimer of God’s word

6. Leadership
o pertains to the capacity to direct, convince or inspire people to do
something
 initiate projects to fight poverty and all forms of dehumanization
