MUSIC

MUSIC

• Music is a form of art; an expression of emotions

through harmonic frequencies.
• Most music includes people singing with their voices
or playing musical instruments, such as the piano,
guitar, drums or violin.
• The word music comes from the Greek word
(mousike), which means "(art) of the Muses".
Four (4) Properties of Music
1. Pitch
 Pitch is the relative highness or lowness that we hear in
a sound.
 The pitch of a sound is determined by the frequency of
its vibrations.
 The faster the vibrations, the higher the pitch; the
slower the vibrations, the lower the pitch.
Four (4) Properties of Music

2. Dynamics
 Degrees of loudness or softness in music are
called dynamics our second property of sound.
 Loudness is related to the amplitude of the vibration
that produces the sound.
 The harder a guitar string is plucked (the farther it
moves from the fingerboard), the louder its sound.
When instruments are played more loudly or more
softly.
Four (4) Properties of Music

 Crescendo: A gradual increase in loudness. It often

creates excitement, particularly when the pitch rises too.
 Decrescendo: a gradual decrease in loudness. It can be
used to convey a sense of calm.
 When notating music, composers have traditionally used
Italian words, and their abbreviations, to indicate
dynamics.
 For extremes of softness and loudness, composers
use ppp or ppppand fff or ffff. The following notations
indicate gradual changes in dynamics
Four (4) Properties of Music

3. Tone color
 We can tell a trumpet from a flute even when each
of them is playing the same tone at the same
dynamic level. The quality that distinguishes them
our third property of musical sound is called tone
color, or timbre (pronounced tam-ber).
 Tone color is described by words like bright, dark,
brilliant, mellow, and rich.
Four (4) Properties of Music

 Like changes in dynamics, changes in tone color

create variety and contrast. When the same melody
is played by one instrument and then by another, it
takes on different expressive effects because of each
instruments tone color. On the other hand, a
contrast in tone color may be used to highlight a
new melody: after violins play a melody, an oboe
may present a contrasting one.
Four (4) Properties of Music

4. Duration

 The length of time a musical sound lasts.

 Refers to the lengths of sounds and silences in music

and includes the aspects of beat, rhythm, metre,
tempo, pulse rates and absence of pulse.
Seven (7) Elements of Music

 Elements of music: Melody, harmony, rhythm, and form

and the expressive elements of dynamics, tempo, and
timbre (tone color).

1. Melody
 An organized sequence of single notes.
 pitch, theme, conjunct, disjunct
2. Harmony
 The simultaneous sounding of two or more tones.
 chord, progression, consonance, dissonance
Seven (7) Elements of Music

3. Rhythm
 The combinations of long and short, even or uneven
sounds that convey a sense of movement in time.
 The most important element, and the essential
ingredient in all music .
 beat, meter, tempo, syncopation

4. Form
 The organization and structure of a composition and the
interrelationships of musical events within the overall
structure.
Seven (7) Elements of Music

5. Dynamics
 Varying degrees of volume in the performance of
music.
6. Tempo
 The pace at which music moves according to the
speed of the underlying beat.
7. Timbre
 Tone color or quality of sound heard.

accessories and ornaments.
 Is the art of transforming a simple attire into
one that of elegance.

How music influence in fashion?

There have been examples across the fashion industry

of when this has occurred:
 When Jean Paul Gaultier paid tribute to the
late David Bowie`s music in fashion shows in 2016,
to the influence that Kanye West has on the fashion
shows industry.

relationship with music and how it influences his

How music influence in fashion?
o Fashion relies heavily on visuals while music is
entirely for the ears. It doesn’t matter if you
know the lyrics by heart, you can’t say you’ve fully
experienced the song until you watch the music
videos.
California Gurls –
Katy Perry
• The music video
shows the
effervescent star in
a mini strapless
dress embellished
with colourful candy
ornaments and pink
tights to match her
cotton-candy-
coloured wig.
Blank Space – Taylor

video Blank Space. The
country-turned-pop
singer first appears in a
decolletage -bearing
all-black lingerie, and
then descends down
the spiraling stairs in a
sultry lace gown.
Discord
 Refers to a state of disharmony between notes or
chords, or the feeling of disharmony experienced by
the listener, usually caused by notes separated by
irregular intervals. From the Latin word discordia .
Concord
 Peace or harmony, the opposite of discord. From
the French word concorde and from the Latin
word concordia.
Harmony
 Agreement or concord ,from the Latin harmonia, a
concord of sounds, and from the Greek harmos a
joint.
o It is important to note that discord is not strictly the
opposite of harmony, rather it is the opposite of
concord. A concord involves the bringing together of
individual items in a harmonious way, whereas
discord occurs when one or more of the items are
not in harmony and therefore concord is not
achieved.
o Whereas harmony, concord and discord are terms
often used in relation to sounds and music, they can
be applied to other matters. In this essay the
intention will be to explore their use in connection
with formal elements, such as line and colour, in
painting.
