Created Value Attribution (CVA)
Industry Convention For Measuring Created Value
Many GPs (and some LPs) perform Created Value Attribution (CVA) analyses by considering shifts in the following major value
drivers:
 EBITDA;
 the “Multiple”; and CREATED
VALUE NET DEBT
 Leverage

The conventional “wisdom” is that increases in EBITDA reflect operational improvement, while multiple expansion is considered
a macro effect and often discounted or disregarded.

The Problem and Duff & Phelps Solution

Industry Convention Provides Insufficient Transparency and Can Mislead

• EBITDA can be purchased
• Multiples move for many reasons
• Investors often assume an increase in EBITDA is
positive
• Investors often assume multiple expansion is macro
driven
• Limited transparency into how value is created
• Convention provides insufficient detail to connect
results to specific GP contributions or initiatives
• Ultimately, EBITDA improvement does not correlate
well with unique value creation Alpha represents organic value creation on an outperform basis
