Meet the Teacher
Andrew Hughes and Lucy Robinson
Staff in Cutty Sark Class
Mr Hughes Miss Robinson
Reading
This term we will be learning about World War 2. We will be reading a
range of fiction texts based around World War 2. Such as, A Child’s
Garden and The Lion and the Unicorn.

Guided reading will happen in small groups once a week with focused
tasks using Oxford Reading Owls programme
Children will have a reading record and we encourage parents to read
four times a week and either write a comment or let your child write a
comment about what they thought about the book.
Writing
This year will be continuing to focus on ways to improve children’s
writing, developing their understanding of VCOP (vocabulary,
connectives, openers and punctuation).
Through the scheme the Power of Reading, the children will be
given many writing opportunities that will be assessed and kept in
their writing portfolios.
We also teach writing creatively across the curriculum and
through our whole school challenges.
Maths
This year we will continue to use the White Rose maths scheme that
covers the National Curriculum. A visual calculation policy will be
available on Google Classroom and on the school website.

We will begin the year with a focus on Number then lead into other units
such as geometry and measurement, as well as looking at formal
methods for addition and subtraction.

Our school ethos encourage a kinaesthetic approach, involving lots of

actions linked to maths concepts and games.
