MEDIA CHANGED THE WORLD? A Purposive Communication Project INTRODUCTION The Birth of the Internet
• The initial idea of the Internet is credited to Leonard Kleinrock
after he published his first thesis paper entitled "Information Flow in Large Communication Nets" on 31 May 1961. • During its transitional period from 1961 to 1988, the Internet Service Provider (ISP) is invented in 1989. • In 1990, Tim Berners-Lee invented the hypertext mark-up language (HTML). • The first website was info.cern.ch, created by Lee in 6 August 1991. On the same day, the world wide web (www) was invented. The Birth of Social Media
• The first social media website
was SixDegrees.com, a social networking website. It was launched in 1997 and ended in 2001. • 2 years later, MySpace.com was established, specifically on 1 August 2003. It’s also a social networking website until it was surpassed by Mark Zuckerberg’s FaceBook.com. • In 4 February 2004, a Harvard University student named Mark Zuckerberg founded Facebook. It was originally called FaceMash, also developed by him, back in July 2003. • In 14 February 2005, YouTube was established. It was created by three former PayPal employees Chad Hurley, Steve Chen, and Jawed Karim. The website was originally supposed to be a dating website, but because of the first video Me at the Zoo (uploaded originally on 23 April 2005), it launched officially in December 2005. Google acquired YouTube in November 2006. • On 21 March 2006, Twitter was established. Created by Jack Dorsey, Noah Glass, Biz Stone, and Evan Williams; it was officially launched in 15 July 2006. • On 6 October 2010, Kevin Systrom created Instagram. Owned by Facebook, it is the most popular photo-sharing website in social media. Way too popular than Flickr (2004) and Tumblr (2007). What is/are the most popular Social Media Website(s)?
• The most popular websites globally are Facebook, Twitter, Instagram
and YouTube. • According to Pew Research Center (2018), these are the percentages of U.S. adults that use social media sites online or on mobile: Number of American Users in Social Media Networking YouTube: 73% Websites (Pew Research Center, 2018) Facebook: 68% Snapchat
Instagram: 35% 11% Twitter
9% Youtube 28% Pinterest: 29% Pinterest 11% Snapchat: 27% LinkedIn: 25% Instagram 14% Facebook 27% Twitter: 24% ADVANTAGES OF SOCIAL MEDIA • The biggest advantage of social media is the power to connect people. It has become a popular way for family and friends who live far away from one another (sometimes internationally) to keep up with what is going on in each other’s lives, without the expensive cost of long-distance calling. • Aside from family and friends, social media is also used academically and professionally. • Social media can also help join fandoms and clubs based on his/her talents, interests and passions. DISADVANTAGES OF SOCIAL MEDIA • Social media can be fun, but it also has a dark side. Showing his/her full information (e.g. exact address, family, etc.) can cause harm. • Cyberbullying (e.g. hate art, dank memes, verbal abuse (especially profanity), etc.) is also common in social media, which may result in depression or physical abuse. • Discrimination is also common in social media. HOW DOES SOCIAL MEDIA CHANGED THE WORLD? • Because of the birth of the Internet in the 1990s, everything has become faster. • Communication via Internet (e.g. Skype, Facebook, Twitter) makes people-to-people connection faster than just simply calling thru telephone (especially when connecting internationally). • Online sharing through social media has became common today. It makes written communication faster than just sending mail to the post office. • Wireless phones became common today, making payphones obsolete. CONCLUSION • In conclusion, social media has changed the world. It makes connections between family and friends faster. • Social media can be a friend or a foe. As a foe, a user can be affected by negative comments and/or influence, leading his/her to depression. • It is very important to stay vigilant in social media. THE END
