Points to ponder

• A driver in a parked car has 2 views of the car

parked behind him – ‘rear view mirror’ (right) & in
the ‘side mirror’ (left).
o How is it that each mirror gives a different view?
o Which view represents the true distance the parked car is from the
drivers car?
o Is a plane mirror used as a side mirror? Why or Why not?
CONCAVE MIRROR- PART OF A SPHERE WHICH REFLECTIVE SURFACE IS
ON THE INSIDE

r
• •
C F
f

C: the center point of the sphere / center of curvature

r: radius of curvature (just the radius of the sphere)
F: the focal point of the mirror (halfway between C and the mirror)
f: the focal length, f = r/2
CONCAVE MIRROR IS ALSO KNOWN AS A CONVERGING MIRROR

CONCAVE MIRRORS
(CAVED IN)

F
optical axis

•Light rays that come in parallel to the optical axis reflect through the focal
point
•Light rays that come in along the optical axis strike the mirror at 90 so reflect
back along optical axis through the focal point.

Ray Diagrams for Mirrors

• use “principal rays” to construct images.

Ray 1 is parallel to the

axis and reflects through
F.
Ray 2 passes through F
before reflecting parallel
V
to the axis. C F
Ray 3 passes
through C and
reflects back on
itself.
Ray 4 goes to the vertex V and reflects under the
same angle below the optical axis
FOR WHAT VALUES OF D O RELATIVE TO C,
F AND V WILL THE IMAGE BECOME:
•Real •Enlarged
•Virtual •Reduced
•Inverted •Same Size
•Upright/Erect
a.do>f d.r>do>f
b.do<f e. do>r
c. do=f f. do=r
How does the location
of the object affect the
image formation in a
concave mirror?
EQUATION
1 1 1
 
f u v
ƒ = focal length
u = object distance
v = image distance

if distance is negative the image is behind the mirror
