GAS LAW:

BOYLE’ S LAW
At the end of the session, the learners are able
to:

1. Explain the interrelationships of pressure, volume and

temperature of gases

2. Apply Boyle’s law formula in solving gas problem

3. Participate actively in classroom discussion

DODGE BALL
Some modifications to the game rules of
Dodge Ball are:

a. A hit is only successful if the torso of the player is hit.

b. Hits on the head, face, arms and legs are invalid.
c. At the end of one minute, the round ends whether the
dodgers are all “out” or not.
What is the relationship between
pressure, temperature and volume?
PRESSURE (atm) VOLUME (L)
1.0 44.8
1.5 29.87
2.0 22.4
3.0 14.93
4.0 11.2
Sample Problem 1:

A tank of nitrogen has a volume of 14.0 L and a pressure

of 760 . 0 mmHg. Find the volume of nitrogen when its
pressure is changed to 400. 00 mmHg while the
temperature is held constant.
Sample Problem 2:

A 200 L helium gas at a temperature of 280 C and a

pressure of 2.00 atm was transferred to a tank with a
volume of 68.0 L What is the internal pressure of the tank
if the temperature is maintained?

1. If I have 5.6 liters of gas in a piston at a pressure of 1.5

atm and compress the gas until its volume is 4.8 L. What
will be the new pressure inside the piston be?
1.75 atm.

2. I have added 15 L of air to a balloon at sea level (1.0 atm).

If I take the balloon with me to Denver, where the air
pressure is 0.85 atm, what will the new volume of the balloon
be?
14.15 L

3. A gas occupies 12.3 liters at a pressure of 40.0 mmHg.

What is the volume when the pressure is increased to 60.0
mmHg?

What is the volume when the pressure is increased to 60.0

Why do we need to know the relationship of
volume and pressure in a gas state?
• To determine how gaseous elements can react
when certain situations are applied to them. If we
were not able to predict how gas would react, we
would not know if a gas could harm us or merely
stay in a neutral state when in different changing
environment.
QUIZ
1. The volume of ammonia is changed 6.1 L.
The change occurred when the pressure was
changed from 520 mmHg to 790 mmHg. What
was the original volume?
2. A neon store sign have a pressure of 760
mmHg and a volume of 2.3 L. Suppose Tyrone
steals two letters from the sign and the pressure
changes to 120 mmHg, what is the volume of
Neon left in the sign?
3. A propane tank has a volume of 3.8 L and
has a pressure of .97 atm. Harry walks by and
lights on fire. An explosion ensues and only .57
L remain in the tank. What is the current
pressure of the tank?
4. Sulfur dioxide is measured as having a
volume of 5.8 L and a pressure of 120 torr. If the
volume is changed to 54.7 L, what will be the
new pressure?
HOMEWORK
Explain what will happen to the
volume or size of a balloon as it
rises in the air. Assume the
temperature to remain constant.
