Introduction 3

 In our country diesel is primarily used for transportation

, agriculture and electrical power generation. Diesel is
becoming scare and costlier and hence there is a need
to preserve diesel for only loco-motive and agriculture
uses. For power generation alternate power should be
use where ever possible so that diesel is conserved and
made available for its primary uses.
What is Dual-fuel engine ? 4

 Internal combustion engine operating on gaseous fuel

have for long been known. Many large stationary
engines use two fuels. Normally of these two fuels,
one is gaseous and other is liquid fuels. The two fuels
can be taken widely varying proportion two run engine
; such as engine is usually called dual fuel engine.
Working Principle 5

 It works on diesel cycle.

 The gaseous fuel(primary fuel) is added to the air

inducted by the engine.

 The mixture of air& gaseous fuel is compressed in the

cylinder. A small charge of liquid fuel called pilot fuel
is injected and it acts as a source of ignition.

 Then combustion starts smoothly and rapidly

and auxiliaries for conversion

 Engine parts
Plant auxiliaries
Additional parts
• Gas supplying system
 Gas admission system, knock detector • Safety device for gas system
 Air/fuel ratio control system • Engine control panel
• Remote monitoring system
Specification change parts
 Piston ring, piston pin metal

 Fuel injector, plunger assembly, Fuel governor

Factors affecting combustion 9

in a Dual-Fuel Engine
 Pilot fuel quantity

 Injection Timing.

 Cetane Number of Pilot Fuel.

 Inlet Temperature.

 Effect of Throttling

 Mixture Strength
Knocking and Its Control 10

 Increased admission of gaseous fuel results in very fast reaction

rates. This followed by ignition with very high rates of pressure
rise and combustion becomes uncontrollable.
KNOCK IN DUAL-FUEL ENGINE CONTROLLED BY ANY OF THE
FOLLOWING METHODS

 Excess supply of air.

 Use of cold combustion air.

 Increased cooling of piston.

 Reducing the pressure of the gaseous fuel

Features of Dual Fuel Engine 11

Less operation cost

 Main fuel : Natural Gas
Environmental Friendly
 Drastic reduction of NOx, Sox & CO2 emission
Stable operation
 Pilot injection system

 Operatable on either fuel of natural gas or diesel oil

Clean combustion and Less maintenance cost
Advantages 12

 The exhaust is clean. Less air pollution.

 The clean combustion results in reduced wear of the

engine parts and reduced consumption of lubricating oil

 Lower initial cost and Lower operating costs than a

dedicated natural gas engine.

 Better fuel economy than a natural gas engine

 Lower maintenance cost

Dis-advantages 13

 Tendency of vapor lock while using lighter fuels

 Tendency of increased wear due to lower lubricity of

gasoline

 Requirement for injecting different volumes of fuel

depending on their heating values and compressibility.
Conclusion 14

 Quality of fuels important factor for performance of

the engine

 Dual Fuel engine generally used for power generation

with long term period

 80-90% of replace by biogas
