badminton.
 Appreciate the contribution of different countries
to the development of the game.
Brief History of the Game
• First originated in India in 18th Century called
“Poona”.
• Introduce by the British army officers as an upper
class amusement.
• Records describe the game with wooden paddles
and a shuttlecock played in ancient china.
• In India later in 18th and 19th century, called
"battledoor and shuttlecock”
Brief History of the Game
• The participants were required to keep the shuttle in play as
long as possible.
• The playing area inside the hall was an hour glass shape
narrower at the middle than the two ends.
• Badminton was played on this odd shaped court until 1901.
• The original rules for badminton was standardized in 1887 and
later revised in 1895 and 1905.
• These rules still govern the sport today with minor changes.
Lesson II:
Nature of the Game
• Badminton is a rocket sport played by either two
opposing players (singles) or two opposing pairs
(doubles).
• The team takes positions on opposite on halves of a
court that is divided by a net.
• The object of the game is to serve and hit the
shuttlecock or bird across the net with enough skill
and accuracy, so the opponent cannot return the shot.
Lesson II:
Nature of the Game
• In order to score a point players must strike the shuttlecock with their racket so
that it passes over the net and lands in their opponents court.
• Shuttlecock may only be stock once by each side before passing.
• Players need to employ a wide variety of strikes in the right situations to win the
game.
• This range from power full jumping, smashes to delicate tumbling net returns.
• Often rallies finish with the smash but with the setting up the smash requires
subtler strokes.
• Deception is also important expert players make the preparation for many different
strokes look identical and use slicing to deceive their opponents about the speed or
direction of the stroke
Lesson III:
Recent Developments
• The international Badminton Federation known as
Badminton World Federation established in 1934 with
Canada, Denmark, England, France, Netherlands
Ireland and new Zealand Scotland and wales
