TECHNOLOGY IN DELIVERING THE CURRICULUM Prepared by: Allen Jae A. Pascua BSEd 1-A DEFINITION OF TERMS: CURRICULUM
•It comes from the Latin word
Currere which means to run or cause of the race. It is a set of courses constituting an area of specialization DEFINITION OF TERMS: TECHNOLOGY • It comes from two Greek words, transliterated techne and logos. Techne means art, skill, craft or the way, manner, or means by which a thing is gained. Logos means word, the utterance by which inward thought is expressed, a saying, or an expression. • It is the collection of techniques, skills, methods and processes used in the production of goods or services or in the accomplishment of objectives, such as scienctific investigation. ROLES OF TECHNOLOGY • Technology plays a role in all aspects of our lives such as education, transportation, communication and so on. • Technology is central to many sectors of society and its integration into the education process has great promise for student learning. With technology, one can expect increased efficiency and effectiveness on both the part of teachers and students. • Technology offers various tools of learning (projected or non- projected) depending on what the teacher sees fit with the intended instructional setting. Teacher decides on what media technology to use to help achieve the set learning objectives. INSTRUCTIONAL MEDIA •Also referred to as MEDIA TECHNOLOGY or LEARNING TECHNOLOGY INSTRUCTIONAL MEDIA: NON- PROJECTED MEDIA • Aids which are used 1. Cartoons 10. Printed Materials without any projection so 2. Charts 11. Black Board they translate abstract 3. Comics 12. Models ideas into a more realistic 4. Diagrams 13. Puppets format. They allow 5. Flash cards 14. Specimens instruction to move from 6. Graphs verbal representation to a 7. Maps more concrete level. 8. Photographs 9. Pictures INSTRUCTIONAL MEDIA: PROJECTED MEDIA • Are media formats in 1. Overhead Transparencies which pictures are 2. Opaque Projection enlarged and displayed in 3. Slides a screen which are really 4. Filmstrips suitable for all use at all 5. Film grade levels and for 6. Video, VCD, DVD instruction in all 7. Computer/ Multimedia curriculum areas. Presentation FACTORS TO CONSIDER WHEN SELECTING CLASSROOM TECHNOLOGY
1.Student Achievement Goals
2.Budget Consideration 3.Equitable Access 4.Classroom Conditions FACTOR#1: STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT GOAL • Your school improvement plan is fundamental to the selection of classroom technology. There are some great solutions for improving performance and achieving outcomes. For example, graphing calculators and probeware can visually enrich lessons and provide immediate feedback in math and science courses, and teachers of reading can use document cameras, interactive whiteboards, software and websites for improving literacy skills. FACTOR#2: BUDGET CONSIDERATION • Consider your funding sources and their availability. A one-time allocation of funds requires the selection of technology with a long lifespan. But technology can be replaced more often if funds are available on a recurring basis. Don’t forget to budget for professional development, technology support, infrastructure, retrofitting classrooms and installations. FACTOR#3: EQUITABLE ACCESS • Allstudents, staff and leaders must have “robust and reliable access to current and emerging technologies and digital resources.” Universal access can be achieved with an infrastructure that brings connectivity to all learning spaces, or by equipping all learning spaces with document cameras and projectors. FACTOR#4: CLASSROOM CONDITIONS • Consider the technology capacity of your classrooms. For a 1-to-4 computer-student ratio or a notebook initiative, make sure there is enough real estate and electrical capacity in the classroom. Also, check the location of electrical outlets; if computers are crowded along a single wall, students won’t have room to work in small groups.
