What are Articles?
Specific

1. After the long day, the cup of coffee tasted particularly good

Unspecific

2. After a long day, a cup of coffee tasted particularly good


The Definite Article
1. Are you going to the party this weekend?
(Refers to one particular thing)
(Can be used with singular, plural, or uncountable nouns)
Example:
You: “Please give me
the hammer and sickles,”
Friend: “...Say no more.”

The Indefinite Article


• Should I bring a gift to the party?
 I am going to bring a spaghetti
(Refers to a general idea)
Exceptions: Choosing A or An
 Rule of using A

◦ Consonants (b, c, d, etc)


“ I have a pen ”

◦ A before U and Eu (sounds like the word ‘you’)


 A University
 A European city

 Rule of Using An:

◦ Vowels (a, i, u, e, o)
“I have an apple”

◦ An before words that begin with silent ‘h’


 An hour
‘A/An’ and ‘The’ comparison
 A/An when we talk about a person/thing for the first time

 The when we talk about the person/thing again

Article Before an Adjective
 Word order : Article+Adjective+Noun

Example : “...... What an interesting story I read today”


Indefinite Articles with Uncountable Nouns
“...Please give me a water”
Water (uncountable noun)

“ I said... please give me some water?”


However, you cannot measure how many exactly is ‘some’ water,
which is very confusing

Instead, modified it in terms of countable units:


“I’d like to have a bottle of water”

A glass of water works too, and that’s where


Your common sense is being tested.
Using Articles with Pronouns
Possessive pronouns : His, my, ours, its, her, and their

 Why are you reading the my book

The & my shouldn’t be used together


Instead, use one or the other:

◦ Why are you reading the book?


(A certain book)
◦ Why are you reading my book?
(refer to someone’s belonging)
Omission of Articles
Zero article
(the article is omitted before nouns that refer to abstract ideas)
