Element: Line
• A line is a mark made
by a pointed tool.
Often defined as a
moving dot.
• This picture is a great
example of lines
because the entire
picture has lines,
straight and curved

LINE: The image
represents the element of
“Line” because it was made
with a pencil which is a
pointed tool. The width of
the lines that make up the
image are very small
compared to its length. The
variety of widths and
intensities of line creates the
image and adds perpective.
Contour lines create the
form of the woman.

Element: Form
• Form describes volume
and mass of three-
dimensional objects.

• This picture is 3-d

because it is a sculpture.
It can be viewed from
any side and it is not
drawn on a wall

The appearance in hue, value, and
intensity of an object in light. This
selection has three colors that are
featured prominently and is part of
the Color Form movement.

TEXTURE: Texture refers
to the surface quality of
artwork.. A piece could be
appear to be rough,
granulated, smooth and
even sticky. This image
here is a great example of
texture because the U.S.
navy Seals in Gilli suites
are matching the dry brush
and grass’s texture to blend
in.

Pattern
• Pattern: something
that repeats it self over
and over.
• This is a good
example of a pattern
because it is repeating
itself.

Composition is the
manner in which parts
of a thing flow
together in harmony.
Botticelli’s painting is
very harmonious, as
nothing is out of place
or in stark contrast.

CONTRAST: This image
illustrates the principle of contrast
because of the differences of values
and colors within the image. The large
black man in the center of the image
contrasts the harsh white background.
This is a perfect example of value
contrast because black is next to white.

Rhythm
• Title: Sym29
Artist: Eric Penington
• Rhythm is the repetition of
visual movement of the
elements- colors, shapes, lines,
values, forms, spaces, textures.
• The repeated shapes and colors
give this picture a lot of rhythm

VALUE
• Value contrast help to
see and understand a
two-dimensional work of
art.
• Value contrast is
evident in colors.
• Ex: In this painting it is
evident that in the half of the
dome that is outlined by dark
colors, fades into the
background

Unity - Unity is where
a picture seems to all
be one. Everything fits
and flows together.
One part complements
another like the land,
the fish, the dolphins,
and the sky.

Movement
• Visual movement is used by artists
to direct viewers through their
work, often to focal areas.
Movement can be directed along
lines, edges, shapes, and colors.
• The artist of this painting uses
movement to move the viewers
eyes from the man on the horse to
the evil Moslems being slaughtered

Emphasis

Emphasis is where an artist will

make one part of the image
more visible. It stressed and
shown as the main thing you
look at. Like here we are
looking at him or the ball.
They are emphasized very well.
