Priming Activity:
“Picture Query”
Analyze the picture :
Come up with three questions that the picture
triggers in your mind. From these questions,
formulate a statement describing the problem
exemplified by the picture
Did you find formulating
Discussion questions easy or difficult?
Questions Why?
Why is it necessary to
formulate good questions
when analyzing a
problem?
Elements in the Statement
of the General Problems
1. Main tasks- they satisfy the question, “ what to do” with the major
variables such as to associate, relate, to assess, to measure, to
determine, etc.
2. Main or major variables
3. Participants: subjects or respondents
4. The specific setting
5. Coverage date of the conduct of the study
6. For developmental research, the intended outputs such as an
intervention program, module, policies, among others.
Example # 1: General Problem
The main problem of this research is to look into the influence of
video games and the utilization of social media on the language
proficiency of the freshmen students of New Cabalan National High
School for the first semester of academic year 2018-2019. The
result of this investigation will be the basis of the formulation of the
guidelines in the development, organization, and implementation of
effective study habits.
Example # 2: General Problem
2. How may the above practices of parents be described as perceived by the parents
themselves?
3. How may the above practices of parents be described as perceived by the teachers?

Types of Research Questions
1. Factor -Isolating Questions (What is this?)
They are sometimes called factor naming questions. They isolate, categorize,
describe, or name factors and situations.
2. Factor-Relating Questions ( What is happening here?)
Their goal is to determine the relationship among factors that have been identified.
These are usually questions for a non-experimental type of research
3. Situation-relating questions (What will happen when?)
These questions usually yield hypotheses testing or experimental study designs in
which the researcher manipulates the variables to see what will happen.
4. Situation producing questions(How can I make it happen?)
These questions establish explicit goals for action plans or prescriptions to achieve
goals and specify the conditions under which these goals will be accomplished.
