Energy Integrated Systems Support and Services

A Power Utility Consulting and Engineering Services Company

OPTICAL LASER TACHOMETER
As part of the Condition Monitoring Training and Services,
this presentation aims to :
• Design a new rotor kit for training and simulation
purposes
• Simulate Single and Two Plane Balancing
• Design a centrifugal fan pilot scale model (small
scale)
• Discuss about the present Rotor Kit observations and
recommendations for improvement.
Centrifugal Fan - Centrifugal fans discharge
air perpendicular to the axis of the impeller
rotation. As a general rule, centrifugal fans
are preferred for higher pressure ducted
systems.

Function Of Fans on Boiler
• Supply Air Required for Combustion
• Removes Products of Combustion
• Deliver Fuels to the Boiler
• Circulate the Gasses for Better Heat
Transfer

Types of Fans in Power Plants

• Forced Draft Fans
• Primary Air Fans
• Induced Draft Fan

Common Issues
• Corrosion on blades
• Erosion on blades
• Material Build up
Two plane balancing
• Correction weights are added to two correction planes normally with one
plane near each support bearing
• The key idea in two plane balancing is that the overall unbalance can be
replaced by two unbalanced weights 𝑈⃗𝐿 and 𝑈⃗𝑅 at the left and right
planes respectively of the unbalance.
• The same procedure as carried out for the case of single-plane balancing is
executed with a fundamental difference that two trial weights 𝑊⃗𝐿 and 𝑊⃗
are exclusively added to the left and right plane respectively.

Observations Recommendations
• Critical Speed not represented well • Fabricate new balancing wheel with
during start-up and shutdown using Stainless material and same dimension as
the aluminum balancing wheel. the original (STI-Rotor Kit)
High Run-out of Hub is observed. • Consider to purchase an original long shaft
• The base is not fabricated well (high at STI.
offsets between holes distance) • Consider to purchase an original base at STI
which limits the rotor in short • Consider to purchase/fabricate a panel for
assembly only. the power supply and proximity drivers.
