HAULING

EQUIPMENT
DEFINATION OF TERMS
• Hauling – this is the activity of transporting goods.
• Equipment – This is a set of tools or other objects used to achieve a
particular objective.
• Hauling Equipment – This is the equipment that is used to transport
building supplies, soil and other materials from one point to another.
INTRODUCTION
• Construction projects require the proper use of appropriate equipment
which tends to contribute to quality, economic, safe, speedy and timely
project delivery
• Hauling equipment can be rail or road or water locomotives
TYPICAL MATERIALS THAT NEED HAULING
EQUIPMENT

•Construction materials, excavated

earth, processed aggregates, heavy
construction equipment and plant,
ore and rock among others.
CLASSIFICATION OF HAULING
EQUIPMENT
• Method of dumping
• Type of frame - Rigid or articulated
• Size and type of engine
• Capacity – gravimetric(tonnes) or volumetric (cubic meters)
• Highway or off highway
• Kind of driving – two , four or six wheel
1. DUMPING TRUCKS
• Dump trucks are used for transporting loose material such as gravel,
sand or demolition waste.
• Almost all dumping trucks operate by use of a hydraulic mechanism.
• They can be classified by the dumping method that is
• Bottom-Dump Trucks
• Side-Dump Trucks
• Rear- Dump Trucks
• End dump trucks
BOTTOM DUMP TRUCKS
• This is either a trailer or a semi trailer which dumps bulk material by
opening doors in the floor of the body
• Big rocks and any kind of clay are not suitable for hauling using this
type of trucks.
• These
SIDE DUMP TRUCKS
• These have hydraulic rams that tilt the body to dump the material either to
the right or to the left of the trailer.
• The mechanism ensures that the trailer remains stable during the dumping
cycle.
• These are among the fastest trucks to unload.
• They offer safety against tipping over but they have limited
manoeuvrability due to their length.
• They are thus preferred on sites where there is plenty of space to
maneuver.
• They tend to carry less volume than standard dump trucks.
SIDE DUMP TRUCK
REAR DUMP TRUCKS
• These are heavy duty trucks with a strongly built body which is hinged
on the truck chassis at the rear end and one side respectively, and can
be fitted to the rear in the case of rear dump, through the action of
hydraulic jacks.
• These dump through the action of hydraulic jacks.
REAR DUMP TRUCK
TRANSPORTING TRUCKS
• Low bed trucks
• Tanker trucks
2.CRANES
• Cranes are use to lift heavy materials and move supplies during
construction
• They are also used in demolition.
• Cranes can be classified as mobile, fixed or static.
• Some cranes are operated by a hydraulic mechanism and some are
power operated.
• Some of the cranes are equipped with wire ropes, sheaves, and a
hoist.
TYPES OF CRANES
• Mobile
• Fixed
MOBILE CRANES
• These consist of trusses mounted on mobile platforms. These can be
on trucks of flat cars.
• The maximum lifting capacity of a mobile crane is .. tonnes
FIXED OR TOWER CRANE
• These are able to lift heavier loads and they have better reachdue to
their increased stability
• Examples include tower cranes that are used in high rise building
construction.
• They
