PROCEDURE
INTRODUCTION

 To provide effective library service to


its users the library has to acquire
suitable reading material.

 The aim of the library is to select,


procure, organize and disseminate
information depending upon the
need and requirement of its users.
Though objectives of library may vary
depending upon their users
requirements yet main aims of any
library:
i. To fulfill the aim, objectives and goals
of the organization or institution for
which it has been established.
ii. To encourage reading habit of the user.
iii. To allow for all the people full access to
and other forms of recorded knowledge.
 Topreserve and communicate and
knowledge of the past and present to the
present generation, as well as to the
future generation
ACQUISITION POLICY
 As book makeup a vital part of the
stock of the library, acquisition is
regarded as fundamental function of
a library.
 It is necessary to have the
acquisition policy formulate before
actually indulging in the section of
book.
ACQUISITION POLICY AND PROCEDURES
NEEDED TO FULFILL THE:

i. Aims and objectives of the organization


for which it has be established.
ii. Financial limitations and
iii. Type of service to the provided to the
user.
SOURCES OF BOOK-OF SECTION
 Readers : Readers suggest either in
written or verbally the books to be
procedure in the library.
 REVIEWS : Scientific and technical
periodicals, newspaper, trade
journals, having book reviews
columns are important book sections.
 PUBLISHER CATALOGUES : and

 BOOK EXHIBITIONS :

BOOK ORDER SECTION
 There are various means of procuring a
document in the library. Some of the
impotent ones include:
1.Purchase:
Purchases form the major means of
acquiring document in a library.
2. Gifts or donation:
Gifts or donation are always welcome in
a library. There are many cases ware
personal collection bequeathed to
libraries have become the main stay of
collections
3. Institutional membership:
institutional membership is another
potential resource in collection building.
The library may enlist itself as a member
of learned societies and institutions who
publish useful materials.
4. Deposit system:
deposit system entitles some specially
designated libraries to receive free copies
of the publication brought out by
governments, national and international
organisations.
5. Exchanges :
exchanges may be another possible means
of acquiring documents. Exchanges are
also possible between to libraries with
spare copies against items needed.

BY LIBRARIES IN THE CHOISE OF THE
SUPPLIER AND EFFECTING SUPPLIES

b. Quotation method
c. Standing vendor method
d. Books-on-approval method

f. Direct ordering with publishers
ACCESSIONING PROCEDURE
 Accession register is the basic record in
the library about each document forming
part of its collection. The general practice
in the libraries is to have a single register
in which all types of document purchased
or received as gift or on exchange as
deposit are entered. But some libraries
have the practice using separate accession
register, for gift and for deposited items.
The following jobs are involved in accessioning:

 Arranging the bills and the books in


parallel sequence
 Entering details in the accession register

 Writing the accession number on each


book
 Certifying the bills

 Transmitting the bills for passing work

 Transmitting books for processing

 Noting and filling the cards
