SPEED

lang
Speed is the rate at which an object moves.
You can compute for the speed of an object by
dividing the distance it traveled by the time it
took to travel that distance (also called elapsed
time).
= speed (usually messured in meters/second,
m/s or kilometers/hour, km/h)
= distance (commonly expressed as meters,
m or kilometers, km)
= time (usually expressed in seconds, s or
hours, h)
EXAMPLE
A cyclist covers a distance of 15 miles in 2 hours. Calculate his speed.

15 mi
2h
7.5 mi/h
EXAMPLE
A bike travels at a constant speed of 4.0m/s for 5.0s. How far does it
go?

1 (4.0m/s)(5.0s)

20 m/s2
There are three types of Speed:

1. Constant Speed
2. Average Speed
3. Instantaneous Speed
CONSTANT
SPEED
lang
Constant speed is attained when there is
equal change in ss in an equal time interval. An
object that moves a constant speed is said to be
in uniform motion.
If a person travels from A to B at some speed, say "x" miles per
hour. He comes back from B to A at different speed, say "y" miles per
hour. Both the ways, he covers the same distance, but at different
speeds.
Then, the formula is to find the constant speed for the whole journey is
EXAMPLE
David drove for 3 hours at a rate of 50 miles per hour, for 2 hours at 60
miles per hour and for 4 hours at a rate of 70 miles per hour. What was
his constant-speed for the whole journey ?
• Distance = Rate × Time

• Total distance = 50 × 3 + 60 × 2 + 70 x 5 = 620 miles

• Total time = 3 + 2 + 5 = 10 hours

EXAMPLE
A person travels from Newyork to Washington at the rate of 45 miles
per hour and comes backs to the Newyork at the rate of 55 miles per
hour. What is his constant-speed for the whole journey?
• Rate at which he travels from Newyork to Washington

x = 45
• Rate at which he travels from Newyork to Washington

y = 55

AVERAGE
SPEED
lang
Average speed is the total distance travelled
over elapsed time.
If a person travels from A to B at some speed, say "x" miles per
hour. He comes back from B to A at different speed, say "y" miles per
hour. Both the ways, he covers the same distance, but at different
speeds.
Then, the formula is to find the constant speed for the whole journey is
EXAMPLE
John drove for 3 hours at a rate of 50 miles per hour and for 2 hours at
60 miles per hour. What was his average speed for the whole journey?

• Distance = Rate × Time

• Total distance = 50 × 3 + 60 × 2 = 270

• Total time = 3 + 2 = 5
270 mi

EXAMPLE
Lily takes 3 hours to travel from place A to place B at the rate of 60
miles per hour. She takes 2 hours to travel from place B to C with 50%
increased speed. Find the average speed from place A to C.
• Distance from A to B is = 60 ⋅ 3 = 180 miles

• Distance from B to C = 90 ⋅ 2 = 180 miles

• Total distance traveled from A to B is = 180 + 180 = 360 miles

• Total time taken from A to B is = 3 + 2 = 5 hours

INSTANTANEOUS
SPEED
lang
The speed measured at a particular time or
instant is called the instantaneous speed. Motor
vehicles have speedometers, which are used to
measure the instantaneous speed of a motor
vehicle.
