MEASUREMENT

IN
PHYSICAL EDUCATION
and
PHYSICAL FITNESS
Objectives
At the end of the lesson 100% of the students shall attain with at
least 80 % level of proficiency will be able to;
a. define the meaning of measurement and evaluation in a
physical education program;
b. identify the measurement of physical fitness and factors that
influence physical fitness.
c. demonstrate the understanding of measurement through
partner activity
 Measurement - is an indispensable phase of
the physical education program.
1.To know how physically fit the children are;
2.To compare their present records with
standard norms;
3.To know whether the teacher’s method of
teaching is effective;
4.To devise ways of improving techniques of
teaching.

4. To devise ways of improving techniques of
teaching.
 Measurement should not be undertaken for its
sake, but only when there is some definite point
of view.
 It is important that measurement be followed by
a constructive evaluation and a follow-up
program.
 The scientific approach to program planning is
the only way the teacher has of insuring himself
against waste.

teaching? How?
 The marks represent the actual observations made
by the teacher of the physical performance of pupils
during the period.

DO THE EXERCISE
Simple test can devised to measure the results of physical education.
Such test may cover the following:
1. Essential elements of physical fitness.
2. Essential qualities of fitness, as a periodic check on fitness status.
3. Nutritional status of physiological efficiency of pupils.
4. Existence of postural defects among pupils, such that the necessary remedy,
may be applied.
5. Acquisition of social efficiency (personality and character tests and rating
scales)
6. The general development of athletic ability (general motor capacity and
ability tests).
7. Pupil progress in physical and social growth.
The factors that influence physical fitness are:
1.Physical exercise 2. Sleep
3. Diet 4. Avoidance of Infection
 To ascertain physical fitness, the
first tests to be given are those that
will be a general “health appraisal”
of the individual.
WHAT IS HEALTH APPRAISAL?
 Health Appraisal - is defined as the process of
determining the total health status of a child.
WHAT IS MEDICAL EXAMINATIONS?
 Medical examinations are very important in
revealing to the teacher those pupils with serious
defects of such nature that vigorous exercise is
harmful to them. Medical examinations will also
reveal minor physical defects that may be corrected
in physical education through exercise.
 The second test to be given should ascertain the
nutritional status of children
 Several well-known tests have been devised such as the
Wetzel Grid Test, Wellesley Weight, Prediction Method,
Pryor’s Width Weight Tables, and the ACH index.
 Posture as defined by the subcommittee on Orthopedics and Body
Mechanics of the Hoover White House Conference on Child Health
Correction, is the mechanical correlation of the various system of the
body with reference to the skeletal, muscular and visceral system and
their neurological associations.
 Test devised determining the postural status of an
individual are as follows:
1.Iowa Posture Test
2.Wickens
3.Kiputh Posture Test
4.Center of Gravity Test, etc.
The purpose of this is to identify the correct
potential foot disturbances and this are the
following test may be given:
 Iowa Foot Mechanics Tests
 Clarke foot print Angle
 Cureton Foot Tests.
1.a need test that will objectively measure the fitness of the
body as a whole;
2.that will be sensitive to the effects of lack of exercise and of
faulty health habits;
3.and that can be understood
 A Strength Index test includes sex strength and
lung capacity test. This index text is a measure of
general athletic ability.
 lung capacity - is a measured by means of
the wet spirometer.
 The results of the Strength Index Test, compared to a norm table based
upon the individual’s sex, weight and age give the physical fitness
index. The drawback in measuring strength in the Philippines is the
scarcity of the measuring instruments to be used such as
dynamometers and the manometers
 General motor ability foots measure the developed
capacity an individual for participation in a wide range
of physical activities.
 The events usually included are: the broad jump, 50 to
100 yard dash, running, high jumps, baseball, or
basketball throw.
1.Classification Index: general size and maturity.
2.Sargent jump : explosive power of the muscles
3.Iowa Brace Tests: Motor Educability.
4.Burpeo (squat-thrust) test: large muscle speed.
 To measure the extent of instruction along the
acquisition of skills for physical fitness, for building
character, and for use during leisure time, specific skill
tests measuring these elements have devised. The regular
use of these tests will insure good teaching in physical
education.
