WHAT IS BOKASHI COMPOSTING?
A two-step process that starts by fermenting food
waste in a sealed container before composting it.

WHAT CAN BE COMPOSTED ?

Any kitchen food waste

WHAT CANNOT BE COMPOSTED?

Liquids such as milk and fruit juice or meat bones
GETTING SETUP
• Bucket
• Bokashi bran
• Papers
• Food waste

HOW WE MAKE A DIY BUCKET?

• Get any paint bucket, make sure there is a lid.
• Buy a PVC bib tap and use a driller to make a hole to insert the bib tap at the
bottom of the bucket.

WHY WE DID NOT CREATE OUR OWN BOKASHI BRAN?
• Lack of time
• Cannot be directly used as it needs to sit in a warm place for a minimum of
two weeks

COSTING
Paint bucket : obtained for free
PVC bib tap : RM2.50 (source:MRDIY)
Bokashi bran : RM10.00 1kg + shipping RM5 (source:SHOPEE)
Spray paint : RM8.50 (optional)
Total : RM26.00
STEP 1 : FERMENTING
We fermented for two weeks

STEP 2 : COMPOSTING
• The finished compost will enrich the soil with moisture, nutrients, and
humus.
• We buried the contents of the bucket directly into the garden around shrubs
and trees or in a trench that we can use later as a growing bed.
• After six weeks the area is safe to plant into.

By-product of the bokashi composting

• Bokashi juice
• Contains nutrients from the food waste and is alive with micro-organisms so
can be used as a fertiliser
• Prevent algae build-up and control odour in the drains, toilet etc
• We only get a little of bokashi juice

SUCCESS OR FAILURE?

The bokashi composting was successfully working!

How do we confirm this?

 A white cotton-like fungi growth

 Have a smell similar to that of

pickles or cider vinegar

 The bokashi bin does not develop

any bad smell
