INTRODUCTION
• Cortical bone forms the outer shell or cortex of the bone & has a dense
structure.
• The larger the area the greater the energy that build up in the
structure as the load is applied.
• B=YEILD POINT
• B`=YEILD STRESS,B``=YEILD STRAIN
• C=ULTIMATE FAILURE POINT
• C`=STRESS,C``=STRAIN
STRESS-STRAIN & YOUNG’S MODULUS
• Stress is the force per unit area that develops within a structure
in response to externally applied loads. Expressed in N/cm2,
N/m2 or Pa, MN/m2 or MPa.
• The two basic types of strain are: Linear strain & Shear strain.

TORSION
• Bone is stiffer and sustains a higher load to failure when loads are
applied at higher rates.
• Bone also stores more energy before failure at higher loading rates.
• Although these problems have been recognized for decades, there has been
limited progress towards identifying the underlying cellular and biochemical
changes. Consequently, at present, there is no effective treatment to prevent
bone wasting associated with disuse.
2. Fractures
Smoking decreases bone density over the years and that makes bones more
vulnerable to fractures.
4. Vertebral fractures
5. Osteoporosis
