FUNCTIONAL ORGANIZATION

 In this structure, departments are according to


the specialization.
 Each department work as a separate unit.

 The line authority is channelized through the


staff specialists (functional manager).
 It has clear chain of command.

 In a large project, a team is required to complete


a single function of project.
 The team reports to functional manager.

PROJECTIZED ORGANIZATION
 It is the temporary structure formed for a specific
task or project with the help of specialist from
various functional department's.
 It is lead by the PM. He has maximum power.

 PM is responsible for the coordination of all


individuals working on the project.
 It has clear line of authority.

 There is strong communication between the


project team.
 It is more focused on the specific project goal.

 The team reports to project manager. 5

MATRIX ORGANIZATION
 It is the mixed organizational structure uniting
these financial and projectized structures to give
them balance.
 Usually, there are two chains of command. One is
functional line and other is project line.
 This structure bring together individuals different
functional departments to accomplish the specific
goal.
 Used in case of large number of small sized
projects to be execute.
 It has interrelated and integrated workflow.
 Use full for ‘project-driven’ companies like
construction.

WEEK MATRIX STRUCTURE
 Functional manager has the power.
 He decides how to do the work.

 Project manager work like a project coordinator


or project expeditor.
 Project manager reports to functional manager.

 Project coordinator can take decision on the


allocation of resources.

BALANCED MATRIX STRUCTURE

 Power divided between functional as well as


project manager in the same manner.
 The project manager has full time role.

 Staff report to both the managers.

STRONG MATRIX STRUCTURE
 Project manager has more power and authority.
 PM can utilize his project management skill on
the project.
 PM have administrative staff under him, still
they have to report functional manager.
 PM control the project budget also.

 Functional manager have a limited role.
