LOCAL HISTORY
The key to understanding the different cultures and perspectives of
small communities.
It presents the past events and experiences of single communities
that live equally unique among the others.
It can be history of municipality, countryside, a residential area or a
metropolis neighborhood.
The national history can be completely read and realized when there
are collective recordings of the local history (Healey, 2008).
LOCAL HISTORY
The study of local history gives a better sense of
truthfulness on the surroundings people live.
Appreciation of the national history begins from the local
history, therefore, history is not all about the past, but its
connection to our everyday lives.
GOALS OF LOCAL HISTORY
To allow the students to be directly engaged in doing it.
This will bring a higher sense of community involvement,
collaboration and commitment.
In doing local history, an eyewitness to the event will have
to take note and consider examining it with someone else.
Interpretation is the conclusion formed in the outcome from
examining historical evidence.
GOALS OF LOCAL HISTORY
See what sources are available and how they can be
used, considering the nature and background of the
sources. In using documents, reasons for its preservation, who had
written it, and the motive of its writing should be considered. Upon
learning how to use primary sources, students may come to know
that history is not limited to heroes and great people. It could be
written by the ordinary masses. These can be supported by
conducting history from the local places.

Time element and place where the event took
place should be considered. There must be
truthfulness and adequacy from the eyewitness.

find out the answer to questions.
WHY LOCAL HISTORY MATTERS
Local history gives us a whole new perspective toward crucial
events that took place in our communities.
In the past, writing history was concentrated in the general
events that transpired in a country. There were limited writings
that were done to include local history.
By understanding more of local history creates historical patterns
that transform into detailed stories that tell the beginning of
huge events and the lives of ordinary individuals.

The need to come up with local history is the awareness of the
divergent and insufficient nature of Philippine history.
The general history of the Filipinos is considered fundamentally
focused in the history of the Northern part of the country where
the concentrations of development are observed. Essential
events in Visayas and Mindanao as well as the rare characteristics
of the historical and cultural numerous ethnic groups in the
country are left out. These led to distortion and misinterpretation
of the writing of events of Philippine history.

For a time being, criteria in writing Philippine history was tied up to the
restrain of western standards. It should be that only written documents and
primary sources are the ones to be considered dependable. There is the
absence of written sources done by the individuals and historians from the
perspective of local backgrounds. Data are also from foreign sources which
could manifest biases. This gives the historians difficulty to write about
individuals whose origin and endeavors are located in their spoken
literature.
The nation’s history must be the epitome of every single histories of its
components.
The interest in the study and understanding of Philippine history mainly
depends of an individual’s understanding of local origin.

People become conscious of their uniqueness, practices and
may feel closer to their hometowns through local history.
One may achieve fuller understanding of history by knowing the
historical contributions of his local place to regional
advancements which leads to national development. It is
through recreating the past about the locality, embracing its
political, social, cultural, and economic life that would enable
the achievement of the real progress for the country. This
includes the development of institutions in the area and the
successes and failure of its people.

The solution to the incomplete national history is to
come up with a more accurate writing of the
Philippine history by allowing the collections and
participation of the local historians. Not only the
historians, but it is also the duty of the local
individuals to administer an adequate and accurate
account of the historical experiences and
interpretations of its own people (Funtecha, 2008).

Choose 1 town from which you reside and conduct historical inquiry about that place.
Identify the following:

1. Origin of the name of the place


2. First inhabitants
3. Common source/s of income of the people
4. Crops or agriculture produce of the town
5. Historical places in the area
6. Famous people or families
7. Festivals, delicacies or activities that the town is known for or is regularly
conducting
8. Other relevant information
9. Sources or name/s of people you interviewed. (Do not be limited with what
you can surf in the internet)
10.Personal realizations of each member.
