PARTICIPLE
 What is participle ?
>>> A participle is a form of a verb that is used in a sentence
to modify a noun, noun phrase, verb, or verb phrase. Most
often, a participle functions as an adjective. Participle can either
be active or passive. They end with -ed or -ing except for
irregular verb.
 TYPES OF PARTICIPLES
1.PRESENT PARTICIPLE ( V-ing )
the present participle is formed by adding -ing to the base form of the
verb. Note the changes in spelling:
- Swimm > swimming
- Go > going
- Write > writing
- Study > studying
- Relax > relaxing
- Grow > growing
etc.
The present participle can be used in many ways in
sentence, they include :
1. VERB
Example : - I am reading a book - We are watching the movie
- Tom and Jerry are fighting because
of food
2. ADJECTIVE
Example : - Fighting scene is one of the reasons - The bird singing on the tree is a
why I like action movies lovely bird
- I really like this dancing doll
 2. PAST PARTICIPLE
( V3 )
• The past participle is also called the third form of the verb. With regular verbs, the
past participle is formed by adding -ed to the base form. Note the changes in
spelling:
look » looked
stay » stayed
arrive » arrived (we only add -d if the verb ends in -e)
try » tried (a final -y changes to -i- after a consonant)
stop » stopped (we double the final consonant if the verb ends in consonant-vowel-
consonant)
• A number of verbs have irregular past participle forms. A few examples are:
bite » bitten
fly » flown
hit » hit
leave » left
swim » swum
