 ISSUE
Letran De Davao Inc. expresses its deep concern for the
rising problem of improper waste segregation. Garbage
segregation is a process wherein the student’s waste
material is separated into different varieties. If it is not done
properly, it could be a major complication in a certain
environment. This issue is a problem for a long period of
time. The growing number of students in Letran de Davao
Inc. increases the involvement of students in segregation of
the garbage which could widely affect the problem of the
waste disposal. What or who really is the problem? The rules
implemented or the students?
 THESIS
Due to our willingness for Letran de Davao to have a
clean and healthy environment, the community are calling
for a full cooperation of the students in developing different
ways to control their bad habits in segregating wastes. We
can say that it has a solution but most students are not
doing the right thing to do. Being a student of Letran, the
responsibility of segregating biodegradable and non-
biodegradable wastes is in our hands.
 REASON
■ Because the primary producer of wastes are the students.
■ Because the students own their garbage and what they
own is their responsibility.
■ Because the majority of the community in letran is
composed of students.
 SUPPORT
An interview was conducted last August 23, 2019 with 20 random
students from grade 7 to grade 10 in order for us to find out the general
idea regarding this issue. The survey contains the question “Do you observe
proper waste segregation?”. Based on the result, we found out that 25% of
the students always observe proper waste segregation, 55% often
segregate and 20% never segregates. According to Republic Act No. 9003
known as Ecological Solid Waste Management AN ACT PROVIDING FOR AN
ECOLOGICAL SOLID WASTE MANAGEMENT PROGRAM, CREATING THE
NECESSARY INSTITUTIONAL MECHANISMS AND INCENTIVES, DECLARING
CERTAIN ACTS PROHIBITED AND PROVIDING PENALTIES, APPROPRIATING
FUNDS THEREFOR, AND FOR OTHER PURPOSES. To strengthen RA no. 9003,
house bill no. 5087 was introduced. It is stated there that all elementary
and secondary schools should adopt policies implementing solid waste
management.
 COUNTER ARGUMENT
Garbage has been one of the major problem in Letran,
the campus’ trash bins are often not sufficiently used by the
students. Due to the insufficiency of using those trash bins to
segregate the garbage it could increase to a hazardous
quantity. Improper segregation wouldn’t help the workers at
all it will make their job even more difficult, they would still
segregate those wastes themselves. Even in throwing the
garbage into those bins is a burdensome for some students,
how much more in segregating garbage. This totally ruins
the image of Letran community in the aspect of proper
disposing of garbage. However, Letran have already
provided enough trash bins for students to throw their
garbage, this attracts students even more in throwing those
garbage rather than just leaving it and if one is encouraged
garbage properly it would be possible that others will follow. Students
can keep the environment clean and make the people free from all the
diseases that it might bring. Aside from that, through recycling those
disposed plastics, we can earn money that can probably help in
developing the economic status of the school. Although it is a problem
for the environment, student officials like STUDENT COMPLIMENTARY
COUNCIL OFFICERS (SCCO) are creating some projects for segregating
garbage properly and way more fun for students at the same time. For
example projects like making some unique garbage bins to segregate
plastics like the basketball bins for the bottles leads to increasing rate of
segregating garbage properly. With all this considered, the rules are
rightly implemented that are suitable for students but the students
intellect, perspective and actions is all that matters if it is good then we
will have a healthy environment otherwise it could be a major problem,
so let us unite once and for all before it’s too late. Be vigilant in all our
actions and wok we put into especially in our environment. Let us hope
our minds, widen our wisdom and dwindle our ignorance because every
waste we throw another life has been taken.
