Chapter 3 Transportation

Every day blood is needed to save lives. Blood is reqiured for


surgery, accident victims or to treat patient with leukaemia,
haemophilia and other illnesses.

Blood donation
• A blood donation occurs when a person voluntarily has blood drawn and used for transfusions
Types of blood donation
• There are other components in the blood that can be donated:
1. Whole blood donors
- Blood contains the following components:
a) red blood cell
b) white blood cell
c) Platelet 血小板
d) Plasma
- Blood is needed for surgical 外科 cases . The volume of blood normally donated is 450ml which
is less than 1 blood pain (568ml). The amount of blood taken is based on weight.
- The time taken to donate blood is between 7 to 10 minutes but you are advised to be in the
donation area for approximately 1 hour. The red blood donated takes 4 to 8 weeks to be
replaced while the plasma is 24 hours.

Advantages of blood donation

1. Reduces iron levels

• However, too much iron can be harmful to a person's health. It can deposit into different
organs of the body, such as the liver and heart, and affect the way those organs function.

2. Identifies adverse 不利 health effects

• Each person who donates blood completes a simply physical examination and short blood
test before giving blood.
• As a result, it is possible that a person could identify unknown health concerns as a part of
the blood donation process.
• A person should never use donating blood to find out if they have any blood-borne diseases,
such as hepatitis 肝炎 B, hepatitis C, or HIV.
• Although low blood counts would stop a person from donating, discovering this information
could help them pursue more information about their health.

3. Burns calories

Disadvantages of blood donation
