SUPERVISOR MR RUSHAMBWA
INTRODUCTION

 Internet of things (IoT) plays a big important role in the agricultural

industry recently in order to provide a support to farmers such as growth
monitoring system of temperature, humidity and water supply, and also
early disease monitoring and detection system.
 Proposal of a portable IoT platform on the edge, which allows us to locally
address contextually relevant sensing needs of the farmer.
 Integrated with a digital farming platform on the cloud, the edge platform
will help to effectively create machine learning based solutions for the
farmers.
LITERATURE REVIEW

 To provide a smart farming solutions, N. Kitpo, et al. (2019) proposed an IoT

system with a bot notification on tomato growing stages.
 Ntihemuka Materne, et al. (2018) gave an alternative method of predicting
occurrences of pest and diseases in the plantation.
 L. Nóbrega (2018) proposed an animal behavior monitoring platform, based on IoT
technologies. It includes an IoT local network to gather data from animals and a
cloud platform.
 M. Hossam et al., (2018) proposed a platform that aims to improve the productivity
of crops through auto controlling the plantation environment at low cost
PROBLEM STATEMENT
Most of the IoT based monitoring systems in my literature review were just collecting
field data from sensors and then send that data to the farmer to implement corrective
measures thus required a lot of human interference.

PROBLEM SOLUTION
To collect field data with sensors in IoT system and with a machine learning algorithm
use a correlation of that data to be able to predict crop yield and suggest corrective
measures to the user. The system is expanded to be automatically actuating, the gateway
can send actions by itself and irrigate/ spray the field when needed.
Aim of the Project
To design a smart IoT system which gathers field data (humidity, soil
moisture, temperature), using machine learning to compare these
conditions to predict crop yield and in turn apply corrective measures
without any input from farmer.

Objectives
• Interfacing a Raspberry PI with humidity, soil moisture, temperature sensors to collect
field data.
• Connect the system to the cloud and creating a dataset from sensor data
• Use a machine learning algorithm using the dataset to be able to predict crop yield
• Developing a mobile application which enables connection between the user and the
system.
SCOPE OF STUDY

 growth process of tobacco

 Machine learning algorithms
 Web and Mobile application development
BLOCK DIAGRAM
SYSTEM DESCRIPTION

 low-cost sensors collect the factors needed for the machine

learning model (temperature, relative humidity, and
the soil moisture)
 The data collected sent using the Wi-Fi module and MQTT
protocol to the gateway on which the machine learning
algorithm.
 the gateway sends back actions by itself and spray/ irrigate the
field when needed.

 The applied action or warning message is displayed on the

website/ mobile device notifying the farmer
EXPECTED RESULTS

• Low or high soil moisture, system will turn on/ off the
actuators respectively and inform the farmer via the
mobile application.
