INTRODUCTION
• Composite steel and concrete structural members are formed by bonding a steel component
to a concrete component so that the two components now act as one.
• Composite construction also refers to two load-carrying structural members that are
integrally connected and deflect as a single unit.
• Steel-concrete composite elements use concrete’s compressive strength alongside steel's
resistance to tension, and when tied together this results in a highly efficient and
lightweight unit that is commonly used for structures such as multi-storey
buildings and bridges.
COLLEGE OF ENGINEERING TRIVANDRUM | DEPARTMENT OF CIVIL ENGINEERING
ADVANTAGES
• Used for commercial and other multi-storey buildings
• Concrete acts together with the steel to create a stiffer, lighter, less expensive structure
• Speed and simplicity of construction - Faster to erect, nearly 25% faster then traditional
construction.
• Lighter construction than a traditional concrete building.
• Less material handling at site.
• Better ductility and superior lateral load behavior; better earthquake resistance.
• Ability to cover large column free area in buildings and longer span for bridges/flyovers.
COLLEGE OF ENGINEERING TRIVANDRUM | DEPARTMENT OF CIVIL ENGINEERING
DISADVANTAGES
• Cost of the connectors which offsets some of the saving in beam material,
• Cost of placing the mechanical shear connectors,
• Erection and construction difficulties when the projecting connectors impede or prevent
workmen from walking on the beams.

RELEVANCE
• Ease and speed in construction and reduction in concrete used.
• More load to weight ratio
• Low maintenance and increased life span
• Cost effective
• Environment friendly owing to lesser quantity of concrete used
