CONCRETE
Concrete is a composite building material made from a
combination of aggregate and cement binder. The most
common form of concrete is Portland cement concrete,
which consists of mineral aggregates (usually gravel and
sand), cement and water.

DEFINITION

Aggregates are a collection of broken stones, gravel, sand,

or other minerals in the form of natural and artificial
products (SNI No: 1737-1989-F). Aggregates are granular
materials, such as sand, gravel, crushed stones that are
used together with a bonding medium to form a hydraulic
cement concrete or mortar.
SMOOTH AGGREGATES
Is a mineral granule that works as a filler in mortar (mix)
and concrete. Or defined as the material used as a
filler, used together with adhesives and various forms
of hard and solid mass called concrete.

TYPE

1.BASED ON DENSITY

type density

Light 300-1800

Medium 2400-3000

weight >4000
2. based on the processing process
Natural Aggregate. Aggregates that can be used as they are in nature
or with little processing. These aggregates are formed through erosion
and degradation processes. The form of particles from natural
aggregates is determined by the formation process.

Aggregate through processing. Mountains or hills, and rivers are often

found in aggregates that are still in the form of mountain stones, and
sizes are large so that the processing process is needed before it can
be used as a road construction aggregate.

Artificial Aggregate. Aggregate which is a mineral filler / filler (particles

with a size of <0.075 mm), obtained from the by-products of cement
factories or stone breaking machines.
USE / BENEFITS

Aggregate Functions in General

1. Save on the use of Portland Cement
2. Produce great strength in concrete
3. Reduce the shrinkage of concrete hardening
4. Achieve a solid arrangement of concrete. With a
good gradation, solid concrete will be obtained.
5. Control the workability or properties of the
concrete mix. With good gradation, the properties
of concrete that are easy to do will be obtained.
smooth Aggregate Function
Aggregates are mineral granules that function as fillers
in mortar and concrete mixtures. Or defined as the
material used as a filler, used together with adhesives
and forms a hard, solid mass called concrete. Besides
as described above, the main function of smooth
aggregate is as a filler between coarse aggregates, so
that the bond becomes stronger
SMOOTH AGGREGATE REQUIREMENTS

smooth Aggregate Requirements– PBI 71

a. It may not contain sludge greater than 5% by weight.
b. Can not contain too much organic material.
c. Sand must consist of sharp and hard grains
d. Sand grains should consist of a variety, If tested with an ISO sieve test
- The residue on a 4 mm sieve must be at least 2% total weight
- The remaining sieve 1 mm is at least 10% of the total weight
- The remaining sieve is 0.25 mm minimum 80 - 90% total weight
e. Can not use sea sand
