Ports and Protocols
1.0 Networking Concepts
Explain the purposes and uses of ports and protocols
Ports and Protocols
Protocol Description TCP Port UDP Port
DHCP Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol: Dynamically 67, 68
assigns IP address information (for example, IP address,
subnet mask, DNS server’s IP address, and default
gateway’s IP address) to a network device
DNS Domain Name System: Resolves domain names to 53 53
corresponding IP addresses
FTP File Transfer Protocol: Transfers files with a remote 20 and 21
host (typically requires authentication of user
credentials)
H.323 A signaling protocol that provides multimedia 1720
communications over a network Telecom
HTTP Hypertext Transfer Protocol: Retrieves content from a 80
web server

Ports and Protocols
Protocol Description TCP Port UDP Port
HTTPS Hypertext Transfer Protocol Secure: Used to securely 443
retrieve content from a web server

Ports and Protocols
Protocol Description TCP Port UDP Port
MGCP Media Gateway Control Protocol: Used as a call control 2427, 2727
and communication protocol for Voice over IP
networks
NetBIOS Network Basic Input/Output System: Provides network 139 137, 138
communication services for LANs that use NetBIOS
NNTP Network News Transport Protocol: Supports the 119
posting and reading of articles on Usenet news servers
NTP Network Time Protocol: Used by a network device to 123
synchronize its clock with a time server (NTP server)
POP3 Post Office Protocol Version 3: Retrieves email from an 110
email server
995 secure

Ports and Protocols
Protocol Description TCP Port UDP Port
RDP Remote Desktop Protocol: A Microsoft protocol that 3389
allows a user to view and control the desktop of a
remote computer
rsh Remote Shell: Allows commands to be executed on a 514
computer from a remote user
RTP Real-time Transport Protocol: Used for delivering 5004, 5005 5004, 5005
media-based data (such as Voice over IP) through the
network
RTSP Real-Time Streaming Protocol: Communicates with a 554 554
media server (for example, a video server) and controls
the playback of the server’s media files
SCP Secure Copy: Provides a secure file-transfer service 22
over an SSH connection and offers a file’s original date
and time information, which is not available with FTP

Ports and Protocols
Protocol Description TCP Port UDP Port
SFTP Secure FTP: Provides FTP file-transfer service over an 22
SSH connection
SIP Session Initiation Protocol: Used to create and end 5061 5060
sessions for one or more media connections, including
Voice over IP calls
SMB Server Message Block: Used to share files, printers, and 445
other network resources
465 secure smtp SMTP Simple Mail Transfer Protocol: Used for sending email 25

Ports and Protocols
Protocol Description TCP Port UDP Port
SNTP Simple Network Time Protocol: Supports time 123
synchronization among network devices, similar to
Network Time Protocol (NTP), although SNTP uses a
less complex algorithm in its calculation and is slightly
less accurate than NTP
SSH Secure Shell: Used to securely connect to a remote 22
host (typically via a terminal emulator)

SESSION ONE
Switching
1.0 Networking Concepts
Explain the concepts and characteristics of routing and switching
Switching
MAC address learning – they learn by source mac address. The sending computer will send a frame to a
computer, the switch is going to receive it and look at its table, if it is not there it will send a blast. The
responder will send back a response with the source address, the switch will save the source address
Forwarding – If the switch sends a broadcast and no response, it will forward to the gateway which is the
router. The router will send the data based on its routing table
Native VLAN – 1 to any you want, it is best practice to change the native vlan other than vlan 1
