A Demonstration Teaching in

PRACTICAL RESEARCH 2:
QUANTITATIVE RESEARCH

by

MISS ALMA R. VELASCO

GOOD AFTERNOON CLASS!

I am

MISS ALMA R. VELASCO

Teacher: Practical Research 2

Dear Lord and Father of all,

Thank you for today.

Thank you for ways in which you provide for us all.
For Your protection and love we thank you.
Help us to focus our hearts and minds now on what we are
about to learn.
Inspire us by Your Holy Spirit as we listen and write.
Guide us by your eternal light as we discuss ways to answer
practical questions around us through research.

We ask all this in the name of Jesus.

Amen.
ACTIVITY
Like or Dislike – Knowing Qualitative Research
Directions: Raise thumbs-up if the sentence is true, otherwise, thumbs-down.

1. The aim of qualitative research is a complete, detailed description of the research topic.

2. It follows an inductive or scientific method of thinking.

3. Results and findings are expressed through numerals or statistics.

Through Verbal language – words, visuals, objects

4. Qualitative research is subjective.

5. Research plan takes place as the research proceeds gradually.

ACTIVITY
Knowing Qualitative Research
 What is qualitative research?
Qualitative Research is a systematic subjective approach used to describe
life experiences and give them meaning.

QUALITATIVE
 When do we use qualitative research?
When we seek to explore, explain and understand phenomena.

 Qualitative research answers what kind of questions?

RESEARCH
The why, how, in what way questions.

 Give an example of a situation where the researcher has to use qualitative methods
in the study?
When the researcher wants to know:
why people behave the way they do; that go on around them;
how opinions and attitudes are formed; how and why cultures have developed;
how people are affected by the events the difference between social groups
1. What do you see in the picture?

2. Is there a relationship between the two?

3. Formulate a research question about the

relationship in the given picture.

4. Do you have any idea about the methods of

research that we can use in these situations?
QUANTITATIVE RESEARCH

Describes characteristics, strength

and weaknesses of quantitative
research.
WHAT IS
QUANTITATIVE
RESEARCH?
Group Activity I – Know My Attributes!
Directions: Divide the class into four groups. Give each group a sample of
research report to read and evaluate. Use the checklist to evaluate the
given samples and answer the given questions. Write your output in a
Manila Paper. After 10 minutes, each group will present their output.
Important observations:
Research questions/problem
Focus of the study
Purpose/Aim
Methods
Data collection/measurement
Presentation, analysis and interpretation of data
Questions:
What is your understanding of quantitative research?
What do you think are the characteristics of quantitative research?
PRESENTATION OF OUTPUT
GO CHEER! Mommy Dionisia Clap!

Clap your hands 3 times,

Group I Clap your hands 3 times to
Stump together both feet Group II your right,
3 times, Clap your hands 3 times to
Raise hands up with fist Group III your left,
closed and say… Group IV Raise both thumbs-up and
Go Group I Go! say…
Beri Gud! Beri Gud! Beri Gud!
QUANTITATIVE RESEARCH
NUMERICAL

A descriptive word pertaining to or

denoting a number or symbol to • Specific
express how many, how much, • Exact
• Numerical forms how long, to what extent, or what
• Objective thinking rank things are or have.
• Statistical method
• Measurement By means of statistics
•Collection of numerical data
•Study of numerical data
Data – real or factual

• Describe (thru numbers)

• Express Association/Comparison
• Express Causality (cause-effect) Relationship
QUANTITATIVE RESEARCH

Quantitative research is a formal, objective, systematic process in

which numerical data are used to obtain information about the world.

This research method is used:

to describe variables;
to examine relationships among variables;
to determine cause-and-effect interactions between variables.

Utilization (5th Ed.). St. Louis, Elsevier Saunders
QUANTITATIVE RESEARCH
Characteristics:
• Researcher clearly defined research questions with greater objectivity.
• Study can be used to generalize concepts more widely, predict future
results, or investigate causal relationships. (Examines cause-effect
relationships.)
• Scientific or experimental approach (Deductive – theory, hypotheses,
analysis, interpretation).
• The data is collected using structured research instruments (e.g. polls,
surveys, questionnaire or by manipulating pre-existing statistical data
using computational techniques) from a large sample sizes that are
representative of the population.
• Numerical results can be displayed in graphs, charts, tables and other
formats that allow for better interpretation.

The overarching aim of a quantitative research study is to classify features, count

them, and construct statistical models in an attempt to explain what is observed.
Group Activity II – STRENGTHS & WEAKNESSES
Directions: With the same group, make a name of your group anything related to
quantitative research. Discuss with your group what you think are the strengths
and weaknesses of quantitative research. The checklist below are aspects you
may consider. You may use a graphic organizer in presenting your output. After 5
minutes each group will present their output with a 3 line yell.

Strengths: Weaknesses:
Researcher Participants/Sample
Findings Data Collection
Sample Administration of Structured
Analysis Instrument
Cost Cost and Time
Data/Instruments Research Method
Approaches oFlexibility
oHypotheses
oSelection of procedure

email, Facebook, Instagram, etc.)
QUANTITATIVE RESEARCH
