What are Reaction Papers, Reviews, and
Critique?
A reaction paper, a review, and a critique are specialized forms of
writing in which a reviewer or reader evaluates any of the following:
• A scholarly work (e.g., academic books and articles)
• A work of art (e.g., performance art, play, dance, sports, film,
exhibits)
• Designs (e.g., industrial designs, furniture, fashion design)

but are critical assessments, analyses, or evaluation of different

and social structure.
The Purpose of the Critique
A critique is anything that assesses or judges a particular type of
work. The critique has the following purpose:
• It gives value judgement on particular types of work based on a
set of criteria,
• I encourages improvement of quality output,
• It evaluate a piece of work for better understanding by the general
audience
How to make a Critique?
• Take time to read critiques, try to figure out their structure, and determine
the content or areas that were evaluated.
• Expose yourself to the areas that you want to make a credible critique.
• Watch a lot movies, even those that are not shown on the mainstream, art-
houses films, or indie films
• Try to get up-to-date with the latest filmmaking styles and approaches
• Go to art galleries and try to take note of the different artistic media used
in a mural or installation art.
How to make a Critique? (cont.)
• Go “cultural” and try to sit through a creative dance or
performance—note the techniques the performers use to express
themselves
• For sports review, get acquired with the terms and immerse yourself
in the technical aspects of the game.
• For literature review, read a lot of works or fiction spanning
different genres and study the linguistic styles and metaphors the
writers use to tell a story
