Circulatory

system
 What is the circulatory system?
 It is a network consisting of blood, blood
vessels, and the heart.
 This network supplies tissues in the body with
oxygen and other nutrients, transports
hormones, and removes unnecessary waste
products.
 It is also called cardiovascular system; cardio
refers to heart and vascular refers to a
channel or passage through which blood
passes.
The Parts of the Circulatory System
 The heart
 Arteries
 Veins
 Blood
 Blood vessels
 The Heart
 Beats 70-80 times per minute
 It pumps blood to different parts of the body
 Itis a muscular organ about the size of your
closed fist
 Itis enclosed in a protective sac called
pericardium
The four chambers of the heart
 The heart has four chambers:
 The upper chambers are called atria
(singular , atrium)
-right atrium
-left atrium
 The lower chambers are called ventricles
-right ventricle
-left ventricle
Heart

 Aorta
 Left atrium
 Right atrium
 Right ventricle
 Left ventricle
 Etc.
 Blood vessels
 Are tubes that serve as passageways for
blood to reach the different parts of the
body
 There are three kinds of blood vessels:
• The arteries
• The veins
• The capillaries
Arteries
 Are the blood vessels that deliver oxygen-rich
blood from heart to the tissues of the body
 It has three layers :
 The intima
 The media
 The adventitia

Veins
 Veins
are blood vessels that carried blood toward
the heart.
 Anyof the tubular branching vessels that carry
blood from the capillaries toward the heart.
 Thelargest vein are those that are connected to
the heart and the smallest veins are called
venules
 Capillaries
 They connect arteries and veins
 They are tiny tubes that exchange food ,
oxygen and wastes between blood and body
cells
It refers as ‘red river of life

It delivers vital nutrients and

 Blood essential things such as oxygen to
the different parts of the body.

Without blood we will die

 Two types of blood
 The RED BLOOD CELLS (RBC)
• They are produced in the red marrow of the
bone.
• Their function is to carry oxygen from the
lungs and transport it to all body tissues.
• They are also called ERYTHROCYTES
 White blood cells (WBC)
• They are sometimes referred to as
LEUCOCYTES.
• They are bigger than red blood cells
• There is one white blood cells for every 500
RBC
• They make antibodies that helps fight
infection
 Platelets or thrombocytes

 They are not complete cells but rather

fragments of cells.
 Smaller and are irregular in shape
 When some blood tissues are damaged due to
a wound or cut , the platelets bond them
together to help form blood clots to prevent
the loss of blood.
 The Paths of Circulation
• The continuous flow of blood around the body
and back to the heart is called circulation.
• The blood circulates is three common parts:
• Systemic circulation
• pulmonary circulation
• coronary circulation
