HUMAN BEING’S
ENCOUNTER
WITH THE
ENVIRONMENT
HUMAN BEING’S

PERSPECTIVE ON

ENVIRONMENT
WHAT ARE YOUR
ATTITUDES TOWARD
THE ENVIRONMENT?
The kind of relationship that
human being establishes
with the environment
depends on how he/she
perceives it.
Humans consider
environment as an
erratic and disorderly
thing that needs to be
reformed through
science and technology
in the service of human
self.
Furthermore, the
environment is
considered as a
commodity or
property to be used
and disposed for
one’s own individual
welfare.
Human self fails to
relate with the
environment as another
subject, as bio-
community. It sees the
environment as
something to be
exploited.

HUMAN BEING’S

APPROACHES TO

ENVIRONMENT
INSTRUMENTAL APPROACH
-human affirms the protection
of the environment as long as
it possesses value or
importance for humans.
POSITIVE: takes care of the
environment for the sake of the
society and civilization

NEGATIVE: humans tend to

manipulate and utilize environment as
a mere thing. Thus, environment loses
its significance.
AXIOLOGICAL APPROACH
-human recognizes the intrinsic
value of environment. This
demands him/her to protect and
care for it.
-Beauty can be seen as the
extrinsic value of environment.
AXIOLOGICAL APPROACH
-needs greater use of imagination
and reflection to see and experience
the intrinsic value of the environment.
ANTHROPOLOGICAL APPROACH

-human unveils his/her being as a

human
-FOCUS: establishing relationship
with the environment
- VIEW: importance of protection,
care, and respect for the environment
NEGATIVE: Humans do not
recognize that the environment
has its own consciousness and
inherent system. Humans
manipulate and control the
environment.
UTILITARIANISM

-FOCUS: consequences of
human action (wrong or right)
-Ethics
NATURAL LAW ETHICS
-there is goodness in human to do good
which is rooted in the goodness of God;
God who created everything according to
his divine plan.
The goodness of reason and intellect
is observed and experienced when
human action is in accordance to
God’s plan; otherwise, such action is
unethical and must be avoided. We
respect nature because God created
it for divine purpose.
Virtue

Ethics

Perspective
The development of our
virtue and respect for the
environment is a habitual
performance of caring and
respecting other non-human
beings.
SACREDNESS

OF

ENVIRONMENT
The recognition of the sacredness of
environment is based on the creation
of all things.

The environment as part of creation

poses an affirmation of a creator,
who caused that everything exists.
Natural environment symbolizes a
possible encounter with the Divine
RIVERS
Because of humans’ manipulative
action towards rivers, this body of
water is now threatened to
become a dumpsite. This action
destroys the essence of rivers as
sources of aquatic diversity and
sacredness.
RECITATION:
Since, we, humans, are the
apex of creation, do we have
all the right to control and
manipulate the environment for
human and economic
development?
THE INFLUENCE AND
EFFECTS OF HUMAN
ACTIVITY TOWARD
ENVIRONMENT
The Spirit of
Stewardship
• Human being is part of
creation. He/she is not
the author of his/her
existence.
According to Timbreza,
human being has the
responsibility to take care,
protect, and cultivate
his/her potentialities,
faculties, and functions.
But his/her responsibility
is not limited to his/her
own self, but it extends
to his/her relationship to
the environment.
Ex. A farmer has to take care of
his/her rice field by sustaining the
condition of the soil. As a
caretaker, he/she should know the
technology that doesn’t destroy
the soil, but cultivates its richness.
As part of creation, human being’s
choice and action influences and
affects the unfolding of phenomena in
the environment.

The potentialities of the environment

may be realized through human
action.
Human being’s action must not distort
the nature of things, but helps it to its
realization and sustainability. In
doing this, the environment becomes
a proximate norm and the creator
becomes the remote norm of human
action.
For Timbreza, this gives us an
holistic perception of life. Being
situated in the world, human has
to establish loving relation with
natural environment, and not to
dominate it for human being is not
the measure of all things.
STEWARDSHIP
- caring
- responsible
- harmonious
-constructive or innovative
WHY HUMAN BEING IS
CONSIDERED AS THE
SUMMIT OF CREATION,
WHEN IN FACT, THE
ENVIRONMENT IS THE FIRST
CREATION OF GOD?
RATIONALITY
-makes human being different
from other created beings.
-capacity to think for she/he is
created after the image and
likeness of the Divine Creator.
ST. AUGUSTINE
- human being is the crowning
glory of the creator who needs to
protect and take care of the
environment. (This is the
RELATIONAL DIMENSION for
being human with rationality and
as image of the creator)
As a summit of creation
he/she….
-has moral responsibility to
respect the environment
-recognizes the “otherness”
of the environment.
LEVINAS believes that human
being’s action is for the good
of the “other,” and not for
his/her own good. The
environment becomes the basis
of his/her judgement and
choice.
Do you agree with the
statement, “Ang
basurang itinapon mo
ay babalik sa’yo” or
not? Explain.

Based on the previous discussion, write a

short essay (not more that 10 sentences)
concerning your responsibility as care taker of
our environment.

The Complementarity
between Human
Being and
Environment
The Spirit of Noncoexistence

-Since the human being has the

capacity for reasoning, he/she has
the power to control the environment
as an object. (This is the wall that
hinders us to establish harmonious
relationship between the two.)
HUMANS’ CONTROL OVER
NATURE
A human being does not
recognize the consciousness and
systems that set natural
movements and occurrences in the
environment. The environment
respond to people through
uncontrolled natural calamities.
HUMAN BEING is the problem
of noncoexistence. He/she
chooses to act against the
environment (ex. A river cannot
directly say to the human not
to throw garbage)
Another problem in noncoexistence
is that when human uses
environment as commodity for the
sake of profit or money. The
environment is not seen and
recognized as a community.
THE SPIRIT OF COEXISTENCE
-shown every time human
recognizes his/her dependence
upon the environment.
-human being becomes aware of
the consciousness and the
natural systems of the
environment.
HUMANS CARE FOR THE ENVIRONMENT
The care and love that human
being gives to the environment is,
in the end, beneficial for his/her
survival. (HARMONIOUS
RELATIONSHIP)
The Filipino wants to be in
harmony with nature through
EQUILIBRIUM
MAINTAINANCE; otherwise,
suffering and misfortune. –
MERCADO (1974)
Recitation

What happens when man does

not consider the environment as
a community?
“Forests and rivers were
his/her brothers. Their
preservation and conservation
was his life, their destruction,
his/her destruction.”
-MERCADO (1994)
Have you experienced to
communicate with plants? What
happens to these plants when
we constantly communicate
with them?
