ABSTRACT

Speaking is the productive skill in the oral mode.

Is the action of conveying information or expressing one's
thoughts and feelings in spoken language.
This study investigated students’ attitudes towards
language learning of the Bachelor of Science in Computer
Engineering. The aim of the research to improve Bachelor of
Science in Computer Engineering student motivation to speak
English through arrange of materials and activities used or
promoting students in speaking English. Promoting confidence in
speaking English is a research which was discussed in the study.
The study further concludes that. The factors that promote
students confidence in speaking English was rated by the
respondents and the factors that inhibit students gaining their
confidence were also rated and ranked by the respondents.
We the researchers recommend that as the result of the
study, promoting the confidence of the second year Computer
Engineering student in speaking English in the classroom. The
result of this study would provide an overview and information
to future researchers to focus their interest in promoting
speaking confidence; hence this would serves as a benchmark for
future studies in our community and other related discipline.
STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM
The study aimed to determine the respondent’s ability,
problems in speaking English using the following questions:

1.) What are the factors that promote student’s confidence in

speaking English?

2.) What are the factors that inhibit student’s gaining their

confidence?

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

The study will benefit the students specially those who
wants to gain and increase their confidence in speaking English
also those people that are still afraid and shy to speak in
front of other people. The study is also significant not just to
the students but also to other people that have a problem
in promoting their confidence in speaking English.
CHAPTER 11
DESIGN AND METHODOLOGY
This represents the research design locale and population
of the study, data gathering, procedure, treatment of data and
statistical tool used to analyze the gathered data and
information. The data were obtained by using both quantitative
and qualitative methods.
Research design
This research employs the descriptive type of research
method with a set of questionnaires as the main data instrument
in gathering data about the speaking confidence of the second
year students of Bachelor of Science in Computer Engineering.
The research focused on determining the capability of
twenty five second year Computer Engineering students speaking with
confidence in the classroom. The data will solicit from the
respondents using the questionnaire that has been given to them.
LOCALE OF THE STUDY
The study was conducted in the College of Engineering
and Information Technology, KALINGA STATE UNIVERSITY, Bulanao
main campus. Specifically the Second Year Computer Engineering
students are the respondents of the study. This study presents
the gathered data from the students as basis for the discussion
of the result.
DATA GATHERING INSTRUMENTS
The research make uses a questionnaire form in gathering
the data needed in the study.
The questionnaire consist of two (2) parts and an
interview, a quantitative for Appendix A, but as for the
interview a qualitative was used.
Appendix A. Gather data from the Second Year respondents
Appendix B. Gather strategies and techniques from the students
and their teacher.

DATA GATHERING/COLLECTION
The research will be conducted in the classroom of the
Second Year Computer Engineering students with the supervision of an
instructor at during the Technical and Research Writing subject.
Twenty five respondents will be given sensory
questionnaires to answer. The data gathered will be analyzed using the
descriptive method. The overall evaluated data will be carefully
analyzed and summary to determine the student problem
towards learning English by speaking.
STATISTICAL TOOL
P= F x 100
N
Where:

P= percentage- a number or rate that expressed as a

number of parts of something divided into 100 parts. was used to
get the percentage of the data.
F= frequency- the number of times something is repeated,
or the fact of something happening often. Used as the total of
respondents that agreed to the question, how many of them.
N= total no. Of respondents- the number of respondents
you need depends on your survey and how confident you want to be
in your results.
The quantitative analysis involve the results from each of

the item, showing percentage of highest to lowest in confidence

speaking questionnaire by calculating it using the statistical

tool. All percentage refers to the number of students who

answers the questions. The gathered information from the

student and a teacher about the strategies and techniques were

maintained for another purposes.

Table 1. shows the Pie graph of the four major skill in learning

language.
CONCLUSION
Promoting confidence in speaking English is a research

which was discussed in the study.

The study further conclude that:

a.) The factors that promote students confidence in speaking

English was rated by the respondents.

b.) The factors that inhibit students gaining their confidence

were also rated and ranked by the respondents.

RECOMMENDATION

We the researchers recommend that as the result of the

study, promoting the confidence of the second year Computer
Engineering student in speaking English in the classroom.
The second year Computer Engineering students of Kalinga
State University must be more confident of speaking English
language inside the classroom, they must be enhance and be more
confident so that they will be able to speak naturally in front
of everybody and to achieve this, they must encourage themselves
to learn.
To their adviser they should try to persuade the student
to participate in the activities, by making the activities
interesting for them and make them believe that they will be
able to improve their skills in speaking English inside the
classroom.
To the teacher, they should seek or make a ways to include
Computer Engineering Students collaboration in this subject as
part of their curriculum design to help them gain confidence in
speaking English.
Lastly, the result of this study would provide an overview
and information to future researchers to focus their interest in
promoting speaking confidence; hence this would serves as a
benchmark for future studies in our community and other related
discipline. They may conduct parallel researches.
Important suggestion coming from both the teachers and students,
on the basis of the collected data, are listed below.

Students’ Suggestions

.More compulsory classes and courses are necessary to make sure

maximum participation.
.Teachers should be friendlier to convince and compel learners in
speaking activities.
.Students need to study more English books, magazines, newspaper,
to widen the knowledge of the target language.
.Group study can be a good attempt to improve English for which
classmates should be supportive and caring to each other.
.Enjoyable classes are considered necessary for motivating
learners.
.Initiatives to create awareness about the importance of English in
the lives of learners should be taken from primary level education.
.Formation of English language clubs can contribute widely in
building up confidence keeping enough spaces for practice with
different activities.
Teachers’ Suggestion
.Students should communicate in positive and self-assured ways without feeling
hesitated.
.Small class of 22-25 participants is required to ensure enough opportunities
for practice.
.Syllabus/curriculum of primary level to tertiary level should cover
activities where students have the scope for more oral exposures.
.Changing the traditional mindset, learners have to take their teachers as
friends and guides with whom learning difficulties can be shared easily.
.Students can form their own study groups for practice outside the classroom,
even after going home with the help of technology i.e. mobile phone,
video/chatting etc.
