The Goal of Scaffolding
The idea of scaffolding
instruction is to provide
instruction just beyond what
the learner can do by
themselves.
The teacher or tutor can provide
the scaffolds so that the student
can accomplish tasks they could
otherwise not complete without
assistance.
• Scaffolding is an instructional technique whereby the
teacher models the desired learning strategy or task,
then gradually shifts the responsibility to the
students.
Students become
independent, self-
regulated learners
through instruction
that is deliberately and
carefully scaffolded.
The first stage in building
sculpture is to attract the
attention of the learners.
When the learner is
actively involved, the
assigned task should be
simplified by subdividing
it into smaller sub-tasks.
Scaffolding Strategies
The teacher gives students a simplified version of a lesson, assignment,
or reading, and then gradually increases the complexity, difficulty

The teacher describes or illustrates a concept, problem, or


process in multiple ways to ensure understanding

Students are given an exemplar or model of an assignment they will be


asked to complete.

Students are given a vocabulary lesson before they read a difficult


text.

The teacher clearly describes the purpose of a learning activity, the


directions students need to follow, and the learning goals they are
expected to achieve.
