I was born in a shotgun house, the first of 5, in the spring of 1961. The town of Tallulah, LA., the American south. These were the signs of those times, before the changes came. Years later, in the season of the Summer, change came to the South, and America. After more seasons and changes, my mother moved us to California. Our family grew, to include my 3 brothers I grew up in South Central Los Angeles in the 70's Life was church, cartoons, and siblings Winter, Spring and Fall, school days, but the summer music and hanging out
• We danced to the music
of Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder and the Jackson 5 later known as the Jackson; the lead singer was Michael Jackson. What we Watched on Television Changed. We moved on up, met the Evans, and a bigot named Archie Bunker After the riots and turmoil of the 60's Intergration brought changes to schools and neighborhoods In the late 70's we danced to R&B Music and Disco We wore Bell Bottoms and Tube Tops • Wearing our tube tops and afro puffs we did the Funky Chicken and Electric Slide, to the sounds of Parliament Funkadelic, the Commodores and Cameo. We would "Shake our Booties", in our Jordache, Vanderbilt, and Sassoon Jeans in the day. But by night, we hit the Disco to the sounds of Saturday Night Fever, The Bee Gees, and Donna Summer. We lost mama at the end of the 70's. It was a long cold winter season for all 5 of us. The 80's Also Changed Me. I was now mother to my own son and 4 Siblings "It's like a jungle, sometimes it makes me wonder how I keep from going under" • The first line, from the first Rap Song. Released on 12' album, it spoke to the discontent of the youth living and growing up in the Ghetto. Melly Mel, and the crew, spit rhymes about, poverty, drug abuse, police brutality, and the sense of hopelessness, of those who lived in those hoods. The 80's Brought Change to Our Music with the birth of Rap Music I survived by Faith. We had more losses, more cold winter days. • We lost Petrick, my brother. He and I were very close, not only in age, but after mama died, we took care of our younger brothers and baby sister. The 90's Brought Changes to My Family, and I Started My Career as a Medical Claims Examiner
• My family grew, I became both a mother again,
and also a grandmother! Somethings were a long time coming, but they did arrive, for me And For Our Country Now here we are, still standing! Many more seasons, many more changes
• Through all the seasons, all the changes, my
family and my Faith still remains my greatest joy.
