Automobile industry in India

• India is the seventh largest in the world


• annual production of over 2.6 million units in 2009.
• In 2009, India emerged as Asia's fourth largest
exporter of automobiles, behind Japan, South Korea
and Thailand
• By 2050, the country is expected to top the world in
car volumes with approximately 611 million vehicles
on the nation's roads.

• After 1970, the automotive industry started to grow,
but the growth was mainly driven by tractors,
commercial vehicles and scooters. Cars were still a
major luxury.
• Japanese manufacturers entered the Indian market
ultimately leading to the establishment of Maruti
Udyog
• In the 1980s, the Indian government chose Suzuki for
its joint-venture to manufacture small cars.

• India has emerged as one of the world's largest


manufacturers of small cars
• India's strong engineering base and expertise in the
manufacturing of low-cost, fuel-efficient cars has
resulted in the expansion of manufacturing facilities
of several automobile companies like Hyundai
Motors, Nissan, Toyota, Volkswagen and Suzuki

• In 2008, Hyundai Motors alone exported 240,000
cars made in India
• Nissan Motors plans to export 250,000 vehicles
manufactured in its India plant by 2011
• General Motors announced its plans to export about
50,000 cars manufactured in India by 2011
• In September 2009, Ford Motors announced its plans
to setup a plant in India with an annual capacity of
250,000 cars for US$500 million.

South Asia. Suzuki Motor Corporation of Japan
holds a majority stake in the company
• It was the first company in India to mass-produce
and sell more than a million cars
• It is the market leader in India and on 17
September 2007, Maruti Udyog Limited was
renamed Maruti Suzuki India Limited.
• The company's headquarters are located in
Delhi.

• Maruti Suzuki offers 15 models, Maruti 800, Alto,
WagonR, Estilo, A-star, Ritz, Swift, Swift DZire,
SX4, Omni, Eeco, Gypsy, Grand Vitara.
• Swift, Swift DZire, A-star and SX4 are
manufactured in Manesar, Grand Vitara is
imported from Japan as a completely built unit
(CBU), remaining all models are manufactured
in Maruti Suzuki's Gurgaon Plant.

combined production capacity of

• Gurgaon Manufacturing Facility
The Gurgaon Manufacturing Facility has
three fully integrated manufacturing plants
and is spread over 300 acres.

350,000 vehicles annually but productivity
improvements have enabled it to manufacture
700,000 vehicles annually
• The Gurgaon Facilities manufactures the 800,
Alto, WagonR, Estilo, Omni , Gypsy, Swift and
Eeco.
Sales and service network

• As of June 2010 it currently has 800-plus


dealerships across more than 500 cities in India.
• It plans to expand total number of dealerships to
1,000
• Maruti Suzuki has 800-plus dealer workshops,
1,945 Maruti Authorized Service Stations and 30
Express Service Stations on 30 National
Highways across 1,314 cities in India.
