The diversity of Indonesia is reflected in diversity of tribes and cultures spread
trouhgtout the archipelago. Not only residents with modern life-styles, but now
in some regions in Indonesia there are primitive tribes that still did’nt touched
by globalization.
One of them is Anak Dalam tribe in Sumatera island. The land condition in
Sumatera very suitable for them because there are still have the lush forests.
People of Anak Dalam tribe is very unique and mysterious. That’s the reasons
why Anak Dalam tribe very interesting to learn.
 THE FACTS OF ANAK DALAM TRIBE

• THE ORIGINS OF ANAK DALAM TRIBE

Until now, the origins of Anak Dalam tribe is unclear. The researchers still
don’t know the concrete facts about how this isolated tribe exist and what’s
make them isolated and primitive. However, an article that was published in
the BMT, Ministry of Social Affair in 1998, said that the Anak Dalam tribe
originated from Kingdom of Jambi.
The article said that Anak Dalam tribe is a soldiers that sent to war and
against the Kingdom of Tanjung Jabung. The soldiers had promised that they
will not return if they can’t destroy the Tanjung Jabung. At the end, the
soldiers can’t make it happend and they so ashamed to came back to Jambi.
And then, they decide to live in the lush forest and make a village that called
Anak Dalam.
• THE RELIGION OF ANAK DALAM

Anak Dalam tribe did’nt had a religion like the religion that spread in Indonesia.
They just belive in something that had a power. Like an Avatar, they believe in
four elements too. Water, land, fire, and wind that they believe the elements had a
big power in this world.
They believe if the spirit of the dead people will go straight back to heaven. Back
to where they came from. Therefore, Anak Dalam tribe make a ceremony for
people who have died so those people can’t disturb people of Anak Dalam who
still alive.
• SOCIAL AND CULTURE

Anak Dalam tribe called themself as Orang Rimba. That’s mean

people who lives on the forest. They live very simple, just rely
on hunting and looking for fruits in the forest. That’s how
Orang Rimba survive in the lush forest.
In their life, Orang Rimba divided to some small groups. The
leader known as Tumenggung.
The daily clothes of Orang Rimba divided between man and women. For men, they use
a cawat to cover their genital. And for women they use a fabric skirt. For you
information, the women just use the chest cover only when they have to interact with
people outside their comunity.
”Their culture is apart of the diversity of Indonesia. Our tribes and
culture maybe have a different things, but we are Indonesia. And the
important things is, we hope that Anak Dalam tribe get the same
treatment by the state and surrounding communities. So they can
exist and become on of the pride of Indonesia’s cultural diversity.”
