• An event, problem, process, activity, program, a single
person or several people
• Bounded system: the boundaries of time and space
• Multiple sources of data: case studies include almost
every kind of qualitative data (interviews, observations,
documents artifacts, etc.)
• Use many forms of data to have in-depth understanding
of the case
• Single Instrumental Case
• The researcher focuses on an issue/concern and then selects a
bounded case to illustrate that issue or concern
• Collective/Multiple Case Studies
• The researcher focuses on an issue/concern and then selects
several bounded case to illustrate the issue or concern
• Intrinsic Case Study
• The researcher studies the case itself without first focusing on an
issue or concern

• The term case study refers to both a method of analysis and a specific
research design for examining a problem, both of which are used in
most circumstances to generalize across populations. This tab focuses
on the latter--how to design and organize a research paper in the
social sciences that analyzes a specific case.

• A case study research paper examines a person, place, event,
phenomenon, or other type of subject of analysis in order to
extrapolate key themes and results that help predict future trends,
illuminate previously hidden issues that can be applied to practice,
and/or provide a means for understanding an important research
problem with greater clarity. A case study paper usually examines a
single subject of analysis, but case study papers can also be designed
as a comparative investigation that shows relationships between two
or among more than two subjects. The methods used to study a case
can rest within a quantitative, qualitative, or mixed-method
investigative paradigm.
• imitates or stimulates a real situation
• Verbal representations of a reality that put the reader in
the role of a participant in the situation

: varies from a single individual or

organization to an entire nation or the world.
: to represent reality, to convey situations with all its
cross currents and rough edges, including irrelevances,
sideshows, misconceptions and little information or an over-
whelming amount of it.
Three (3) Characteristics
• A significant issue or issues (educational value)
• Sufficient information on which to base conclusions
(adequate fact base to make reasonable conclusion/s)
• No stated conclusion/s (it doesn’t state any conclusion/s)
1.Writing case studies might be the most dreaded part of
building a design portfolio. ...
2.Write down your case studies before you do almost
anything else.
3.Keep it brief & caption everything.
4.Include the right details.
5.Give credit & explain your role.
6.Write in your voice.
7.Don't image dump.
1.Read and Examine the Case Thoroughly. Take notes,
highlight relevant facts, underline key problems.
2.Focus Your Analysis. Identify two to five key problems. ...
3.Uncover Possible Solutions/Changes Needed. Review
course readings, discussions, outside research, your
experience.
4.Select the Best Solution.
5.
• Identify and understand the important aspects of a situation and
what they mean in relation to the over-all situation
• Active reading: interrogative and purposeful (ask questions and seek
answers)
• Understanding is vague – How do you know when to conclude the
study of a case?
• Put yourself in the shoes of the protagonist/s (the main character/s):
their problems should be your problems
1.Introduction. Identify the key problems and issues in the
case study; Background; Set the scene: background
information, relevant facts, and the most important issues.
2.Method: approaches, theory, design
3.Results: Alternatives; Proposed Solution.
4.Discussion and Conclusion: Recommendations.
• Working title (you are free to choose any topic or story that is closed
to your previous work or assignment)
• Case Topic, Issue or Concern (reflects your title, outline the case
according to parts or sections (constructs) that you want to narrate
– make sure they all support and point back to your topic or title)
• Significance of the Case (Why is the case important? What new
knowledge or information can be generated? What can it
contribute to community policing or to peace and human rights or
to climate change adaptation or to prevention and countering o
radical extremism, insurgency and terrorism – as the case may be)
• Problems for analysis (Several problems may crop up from your
narrative) Enumerate several questions that you want readers to
answer. Start by asking: what is the most pressing issue or problem
that the case has presented? Follow through with three (3) or more
other questions
