EXPOSITORY

ESSAY
Expository writing (also called exposition) deals
objectively with facts, ideas and opinions. It is
writing design to explain, to make clear, and to
make inform. Opinions are not out of place in
exposition, but they should be objectively
presented. Neither is a personal tone necessarily
put of place in this kind of writing, but it should
be a tone of reasonable objectively. An
expository essay is a piece of written work that
aims to define and investigate a topic for the
reader.
• It also seeks to prove a thesis through factual
evidence. Putting together an explanation
might sound easy but it is actually quite a
challenge to write a convincing piece that
defends your thesis.
Types of Expository Essay Writing
• Descriptive Essay - This is an essay in which
the writer is asked to describe something. This
could be a person, place, experience, situation
etc. Describe a tricky situation you were in,
and how you manage to handle it.
• How to or Process Essay - The classic "How
To" assignment. The purpose of this essay is to
train the reader into learning a process. Here
are the example.
1. How to build tree house.
2. How to bake a cake and
3. How to edit a paper.

• Comparison Essay - Simple sounding enough,

makes you critically analyze any two subjects,
finding and explaining their similarities and/or
differences.
• Cause and Effect Essay - Why and or how
things happens as a result.
• Problem/Solution Essay -The universal
standard prompt assignment in this situation
we have a problem and are looking for
solutions. The essay is broken down into a
brief intro to the problem and filled with
content about the solutions.
Techniques in order to prepare to write an
Expository Essay
1. State your topic fully or prepare a thesis sentence for
your paper, or both ▶ A thesis sentence one
sentence expression of the overall content of the
paper. It is sometimes called the controlling idea.
Example is.
TOPIC: The superior features of the Mercedes-Benz
THESIS SENTENCE: The Mercedes-Benz is a superior car
because of advanced engineering features in its power
train and suspension.
TITLE: The King of Foreign Cars
2.Plan your organization around main points derived
from a plural noun stated or implied in your topic.
▶ Most topics for expository papers will either have
a plural noun expressed or one implied that can, in a
sense, be divided into main points for the paper. Once
you spot this noun, you should jot down the three to
five main points that it suggests. For example.
▷The fuel-injection system.
▷The air-suspension system.
3. Arrange your main points in their most
effective order.
▶ One does not always think of main points in
the order in which one wants to take them up.
So after you have jutted down your main points,
decide the order in which you want present
them.
4. Plan to have one paragraph for each main
point and to express that main point in a topic
sentence.
▶ A topic sentence express a main point
clearly and prepares the way for development of
that main point.
▶ Do not mix two main points in one
pragraph, and do not have more than one
paragraph for a main point unless the paragraph
runs to more than 150 words, then you may
divide it into paragraphs.
5. Maintain coherence in each paragraph.
▶ When writing is coherent, it is unified,
consistent, and intelligible. Coherence (the word
literally means "a sticking together") is produced
by proper transistion between sentences. One
of the three chief ways to achieve transistion is
to use transitional words and phrases.
6.) Let your opening sentence lead directly into your
topic.
▶ Do not try to be cute or folsky or startling or
teasing in your introduction. Instead be direct and brief.
Here is an example:
TOPIC: A teen-ager's duties to his or her parents.
OPENING: Everyone naturally accepts the fact that
parents have obligations to their children, but it is also
true that teen-ager's owe many duties to their parents.
One of these duties is to prepare through education to
be self-supporting.
*Publishing the Expository Essay
• SHARING AN EXPOSITORY ESSAY WITH THE
REST OF THE CLASS CAN BE BOTH EXCITING
AND INTIMIDATING. REMEMBER, THERE ISN'T
A WRITER ON EACH WHO ISN'T SENSITIVE
ABOUT HIS OR HER OWN WORK. THE
IMPORTANT THING IS TO LEARN FROM THE
EXPERIENCE AND USE THE FEEDBACK TO
MAKE THE NEXT ESSAY BETTER.
