Reading Text Critically

Learning objectives

At the end of the session, the students will


be able to :
1. Define critical reading
2. Determine the claims made in a text.

CRITICAL READING

Is a skill which goes beyond the reading of


the written text.

Is a type of reading whereby the reader


analyzes and interpret the reading material to
know if it presents logical ideas and
connection of ideas.
CRITICAL READING

Is done when a reader would like to


understand the text’s deeper meaning
because it is a way of knowing how a writer
thinks.
Is also done to evaluate the validity of
facts, opinions and inferences presented.
TYPES OF CLAIMS

Claim of policy
Claim of fact
Claim of value
A. Claim of fact

Asserts the existence of something based on


facts and data.
Attempts to define, and make inferences.
Pieces of information which are grounded
on reliable authority such as science or
history.

Statistics, there are approximately

worldwide.

the Philippines during Typhoon
Yolanda shows the readiness of
disaster relief protocols established
by the government.
B. Claim of policy

oAsserts that certain policies must be


instituted as solutions to a particular
problems.
oSpecific statements on procedures or laws
that need to be modified based on
certain issues or conditions.

In the end, it is up to us whether to


use social media to our
advantage or allow it to destroy
us.

Childhood obesity in our country has more


than tripled in the past 30 years. Today, one
in six children in our country is obese. This is
unacceptable. As parents, we try to provide
a better future for our children, better than
we’ve ever had. We need to stand up and
do what we can. We can start by supporting
the passing of the anti-junk food bill in
schools and other child-friendly areas
C. Claim of value

oPieces of information that are focused on


relative judgment such as goodness or
badness, and these are usually addressed
based on standards.
oIt involves judgements and evaluation of
the author.
C. Claim of value

oThe standards of evaluation must be


well-established and must be
clarified through example.

Facebook has always been a very


effective way to advertise business,
look for job opportunities, be informed
about important world phenomenon
and search for great leisure places to
visit.

for cyberbullying and prostitution
that cause many people pain and
suffering.

Claim of value are Not always


stated in a positive way, but they
also be expressed in negative
based on author’s point of view.
