ART MEDIA

Two-Dimensional
Media
DRAWING
Drawings can be: independent works of art,
sketches, or supportive material for paintings,
sculptures, and other projects. The preparatory
drawings for tapestries and frescoes are called
cartoons. Drawings use dry media , and fluid
media
FIBER ARTS
Include works of art that use fabrics and fibers as
their primary media. Tapestry is a work created by
weaving wool, cotton, silk, and other natural and
synthetic materials.
MIXED MEDIA
The use of different materials/ media in the same
work. Collage is a work made by pasting different
materials. Photomontage is a collage of
photographs.
MOSAIC
A technique that juxtaposes pieces of glass, stone,
or tiles, called tesserae, to create a design. Mosaics
are created for walls, floors, and various objects, as
well as three dimensional works.
PAINTING
A painting is a work of art that uses paint to create images. The paint is
applied to a surface called support, and paints are mixed with a solvent.
Based on the paint and techniques used.
Acrylic: the use of synthetic paint, which can be mixed with water
and applied to various supports, including canvas.
Encaustic: an ancient technique using pigments mixed with hot wax.
Fresco: a technique where pigments, mixed usually with water, are
applied onto wet plaster. After drying, the paints become literally part
of the wall.
Oil painting: the use of pigments mixed with an oil-based binder
using solvents (or thinners) applied to wood and other types of
panels, and most commonly to canvas.
Tempera: the use of pigments mixed with oil, egg, and water binders
applied to a variety of surfaces, including paper, wood, and canvas.
Watercolor: a technique that mixes paint with water, usually applied
to paper.
PHOTOGRAPHY.
A process that uses light to create an image on a
surface. Traditional photography employs film to create
a negative, which, when chemically processed, can be
fixed onto a surface and produce a print. Multiple
prints can be made from one negative. Digital
photography has eliminated processes and materials
specific to traditional photography. There are various
categories of photography based on the form or
purpose of images, type of equipment, and techniques
used.
PRINTMAKING
A process of producing multiple similar images. Relief printing is a
printing process where the area around the design to be printed is
carved out. The ink, applied with a roller, covers only the raised area
of the design. It includes the woodcut and linocut. Intaglio is a
process of carving the design into a metal plate. It includes
engraving, a technique that requires the manual incision of the
design onto the plate. Etching is a similar process, but it uses acid to
create the grooves in the metal plate, allowing more visual
possibilities. Drypoint is similar to engraving, but uses a needle to
form ridges, thus creating greater visual variety. Lithography is a
printing technique using stone as the plate. Unlike wood or metal
plates, stone could be reused for other works. Silkscreen is a printing
method that uses stencils.
Three-Dimensional
Media
ARCHITECTURE
is an art concerned with creating buildings. (A term also used is
“built environment”) Post and lintel is a basic system of building,
using two supporting vertical posts on which a horizontal lintel or
beam is placed. Columns are often used for support. Arches are
curved connections between supporting posts. The best known
types of arches are the Roman arch and the pointed/gothic arch.
The invention of the Roman arch led to the development of vaults,
barrel vaults, and domes. For practical reasons architecture favors
durable materials. Concrete, invented by the Romans, and steel and
reinforced concrete, introduced in modern times, have contributed
to both the system of building and the visual aspects of structures.
Green/Eco architecture is a contemporary trend reflected in the
materials used and the relationship between the building and the
environment.
BOOK ARTS
The book is the medium and conceived as a three–
dimensional mixed media work of art, which may
include text, images, and even electronic media.
CERAMICS
Are made from clay. There are many different kinds of
clay and techniques. Clay is coated with glaze before
firing. Glazes change their color at high temperatures.
The kiln is a furnace designed for firing clay. The time
needed for clay objects to be fired depends on size,
method, and glazes, and varies from a few hours to
several days.
GLASS ART
This type of art uses glass as its primary medium.
Glass-blowing is the process that allows this
material, which is soft while hot, to be manipulated
into the desired shapes.
SCULPTURE
Relief sculpture is connected to a two-dimensional surface.
Depending on the differences between the background and the
highest protruding area, relief can be low (also called bas-relief)
or high.
Freestanding sculpture has a full three-dimensional quality
and can be seen from all sides. A statue is a sculpture, usually
representing a person, animal, or event. There are two main
processes in sculpture:
1. The subtractive process involves carving into the material.
It is used for stone and wood.
2. The additive process means that materials are added to
create a sculpture. It has been traditionally used for clay and
bronze.
SCULPTURE (THREEDIMENSIONAL
MIXED MEDIA)
Assemblage is a three dimensional work that encompasses a
variety of materials, including found objects.
Found objects are works that use everyday objects. Another
term is “ready-made.”
Installations are temporary works, composed of separate parts
arranged in a specific place.
Kinetic (mobile) sculptures are works that involve movement,
achieved either through a machine or naturally.
NEW MEDIA
Body Art
is an art form where the body is used as support
and medium, such as tattoos
Digital Media/Art
is a term that refers to the tools and materials used
in art making (e.g. a digital camera) or in the
dissemination process (the web, etc.). Artists use
digital media for multiple purposes
Earthworks and Environmental Art
use nature as their primary medium
Multimedia
is a term used for works of art created with a wide
variety of materials and media, such as video and
electronic art, music, and performance
Performance art
includes in the work, in addition to the artist, many
eclectic components, and at times involves audience
participation
Time-based art
This term defines a broad range of art, including
video, film, and multimedia, where there is a time
component in viewing the entire work. Video art
refers specifically to art created using video as the
medium. Video installations are works also
comprising three-dimensional components.
Animation uses a variety of processes, including
digital media to create “moving images.”
Web-based art
This art uses the web for both its dissemination and
its creation and is often interactive.
