Various Meanings of
What is Meaning?
The Word “Mean”
What is Meaning?
• It’s not enough to know the sounds and the sounds pattern in
language. Just being able to pronounce an English word does not
mean that one as mastered that word if he does not know anything
about meaning of that word. It is just like a parrot that produce a
word-like utterance “good morning” but said in the afternoon.
Therefore, if one does not know a language, the sounds spoken to
him will be only incomprehensible.
• The relationship between speech sounds and meanings they
represent is, for the most part, an arbitrary. We should learn that
the sounds represented by the letters ‘door’ in the written form
signify the concept of ‘door’ which is represented ‘pintu’ in
indonesian and ‘lawang’ in javanese. This example shows that the
sounds of words are only given meaning by the language in which
they occur. The physical attributes of object do not determine their
pronounciation in any language.
 Meaning can be understood as “information”
we receive through our five senses from our
environment. It can be received through our
ears, eyes, nose, skin, and even our tongue.
While in the dark at home, through our skin
touching something, we will know what thing it
is. We will know through our smelling if
something is burning . We can know that certain
sound indicates that a motorcycles is passingby
and so on.

QUESTION AND ANSWER
SESSION
1.How do people sometimes build different meanings from one exactly the same sentence?
( Diana Ariani)

Answer : English can be a confusing language to learn! Have you ever come across two words that
sound the same, but have different meanings? These are called homophones.Homophones are two or
more words that sound the same (identical pronunciation), but have different meanings. These words
are often spelt differently in English too (e.g. pear vs. pair). The term homophone comes from Greek
‘homo-’ (meaning: same) and ‘-phone’ (meaning: sound or voice), so the word literally means: ‘same
sound’.
